MILWAUKEE - Conference USA today named Marquette women's soccer player Kelly Roethe (Wauwatosa, Wis. / Divine Savior Holy Angels) its 1998-99 Scholar Athlete of the Year for women's soccer. It is the second straight season that the junior midfielder has earned the award, which is based on academic achievement (GPA), athletic achievement and service. The Scholar Athlete of the Year awards are presented to the top student-athletes in each conference-sponsored sport.
A biology major who carries a 3.71 GPA, Roethe had previously been named to the 1998 Scholar Athlete All-America Third Team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), and was also an NSCAA Scholar Athlete All-Central Region First Team selection. The Marquette women's team also had been previously chosen as one of only 133 recipients of the NSCAA Team Academic Award.
With six points in Marquette's season-opening 10-1 win at Purdue, Roethe became Marquette's all-time leading scorer and she continued to build on that milestone throughout the season. She finished 1998 with 32 points on 12 goals and eight assists and ranked among the top four players in Conference USA in each of those categories. She also led the team with four game-winning goals, giving her 13 for her career. She set new Marquette single-season records for points and goals by a junior. Roethe now has 90 points on 36 goals and 18 assists in her three seasons at Marquette. She is also the career leader in goals and game-winning goals. This was the third straight season that Roethe had been selected to the All-Conference USA First Team.
