The last two days were spent steeped in the history of the island of Gotland. Yesterday, we took a walking tour inside the city walls of Visby. We had a great guide (who even pushed through the rain) to take us through the city and its medieval history. Kings ransacked the island, and civil war has broken out, but today it is very peaceful and friendly. There are close to 100 churches (or ruins of churches), dating back to the 1200s. Several of the churches have been restored and are still in use today. They were very impressive.
Our first game versus Visby was a game of runs. The home team jumped out to an early 13-point lead, but that same lead was exchanged a number of times. We finally took control in the last three minutes and took the victory with a final score of 77-71.
Our second game against Visby was a much better match-up than the previous two games over here. Two "new recruits" arrived just off the boat (literally) for the Visby ladies. Those two definitely made their presence known early, but we managed to handled the pressure like pros and pulled out another victory, 74-71. Everyone has been playing terrific and it looks good to see Marquette back in action. We've still got a long way to go, but we've got a great basis to work from.
Tomorrow, we get to spend part of the day on our own on the island. Many are planning some souvenir shopping, bicycling or fishing. The rest of the day will be spent travelling.
That's all for tonight! Go Golden Eagles! Marquette Women's Basketball (as told by senior Lisa Oldenburg)
