THE WEEK AHEAD Markus Roeders? Marquette women?s soccer team (2-3) opens its Conference USA schedule with a pair of weekend road games. The Golden Eagles kick off league action on Fri., Sept. 17, with a 7 p.m. (CT) game at Saint Louis. Marquette then continues its southward league trip with a contest at Houston on Sun., Sept. 19, at 1 p.m.
LAST WEEK Coming off a trying opening to the season, in which Marquette went 1-3 in 10 days, the Golden Eagles took a week off before downing in-state rival 8-0 at Valley Fields on Sun., Sept. 12. The Golden Eagles out-shot the Phoenix 33-1 en route to their first shutout win of the season. Every player on the Marquette roster saw considerable action during the contest.
A LOOK AT SAINT LOUIS After a 1-1 overtime tie at Indiana on Sun., Sept. 12, the Billikens are now 3-1-1 on the young season. Head coach Tim Champion?s squad features a mix of experienced veterans and several talented newcomers. Preseason All-C-USA selection Trisha Underberg paces the Bills in scoring with 12 points. The senior midfielder teams with classmate Katie Stewart to give SLU an effective offensive attack from the midfield. Freshman keeper Meghan Burke staked an early claim on C-USA Freshman of the Year honors over the weekend with strong performances against UT-Martin and Indiana for which she was named the C-USA Defensive Player of the Week. Champion is in his fourth year at SLU, where he has compiled a 33-24-7 (.570) mark. He is 106-52-13 (.658) in eight-plus seasons overall. Marquette holds a 2-1 series edge after winning 1-0 at Valley Fields last season. All three games between Saint Louis and Marquette have been decided by a 1-0 score, with two of the three going to overtime to determine the victor.
A LOOK AT HOUSTON Aptly-named head coach Chris Huston is in her second season with the Cougars, having a compiled a record of 12-13 (.480). Houston was the surprise of the league in 1998, earning an 8-3 C-USA mark in only its first year of existence. However, the Cougars have struggled so far in 1999, opening the season with a 1-5 record. This past weekend, Houston dropped a pair of games at the Texas A&M Tournament, falling to Ohio State 1-0 and to Navy 4-0. The Cougars are led by keeper Michelle Denomme?, a Preseason All-C-USA selection. The senior has made 31 saves and has a 2.25 GAA. Sophomore midfielder Kara Bullinger paces the Houston offense with five points. Houston holds a 1-0 series lead over Marquette after upsetting then-#23 Marquette 2-1 in Milwaukee last season. The Cougars host DePaul on Sept. 17 before battling Marquette.
HEAD COACH MARKUS ROEDERS Markus Roeders has a 47-16-7 (.721) record in his fourth season as head coach at Marquette. He led the Golden Eagles to back-to-back C-USA regular-season championships in 1996-97 and has guided the Golden Eagles to three consecutive trips to the C-USA Tournament championship game. Effective Sept. 1, he started a three-year term as a member of the NCAA Division I Women?s Soccer Committee. A 1990 graduate of UNC Asheville, Roeders earned the 1996 C-USA Coach of the Year Award. Prior to taking over the reigns of the women?s program, Roeders served for two years as assistant coach for the Marquette men?s team under his collegiate coach Steve Adlard. Roeders played his final two seasons at UNC Asheville and was team captain as a senior. He is assisted by Frank Pelaez and Dan Holcomb.

?NETTE GAINS Lanette Rossini (Roseville, Minn. / Totino-Grace) was selected as the C-USA Offensive Player of the Week for her performance against UW-Green Bay Sunday evening. The junior midfielder tallied the first hat trick of her collegiate career and tallied seven points in the contest. Rossini opened the scoring with what proved to be the game-winning goal only 1:13 into the contest on a seven-yard strike from the left side of the box. She also tallied Marquette?s sixth goal on a nifty give-and-go with Ashley Spakowitz and concluded the scoring with a six-yard header with only 36 seconds remaining. The 5-4 Rossini has nine points, good for second on the team. Rossini continues to move up the Marquette career scoring charts: she is currently in fourth place on the all-time goals list (16), tied with teammate Erin Morgan for fourth in all-time assists (14) and in fifth place in all-time points (46).
RAY OF LIGHT Senior midfielder Kelly Roethe (Wauwatosa, Wis. / DSHA) became the first Marquette player to reach the 100-point milestone with the game?s second goal Sunday. Roethe blasted a volley from Rossini into the back of the net for her 100th and 101st career points just five minutes into the game. She later added an assist on an Erin Morgan goal. Roethe leads Marquette with 12 points on four goals and four assist. The three-time All-C-USA First Team selection is MU?s all-time leading scorer with 102 points. She is also the Golden Eagles? all-time leading goal scorer (40) and is ranked among the program?s all-time assists leaders (22).
POINT FORWARD Forward Erin Morgan (Stevens Point, Wis. / Stevens Point Area) tallied the third Marquette goal against UWGB on a 15-yard shot from the right side of the box. Morgan had also assisted on Rossini?s game-winner and now has five points on the season. The 5-1 senior also is among Marquette?s career leaders with 50 points (fourth), 18 goals (third) and 14 assists (tied for fourth).
MAKING A NAME FOR HERSELF Midfielder Stephanie Welch (Columbus, Ohio / Thomas Worthington), formerly known as the little sister of record-holding Marquette men?s goalkeeper Jim Welch, broke free of that shadow with a two-goal game against UW-Green Bay. Welch came onto the pitch at left outside midfield late in the first half and opened the second-half scoring with a six-yard bullet off a cross at the 47:03 mark. Over 20 minutes later, Welch won the race to a loose ball in the box and tapped it by a sprawling Phoenix keeper from 15 yards out. The goals were the first points of her collegiate career and she narrowly missed a hat trick when a third shot was tipped into the crossbar by the UWGB keeper.
HALLEY?S COMET Also collecting the first goal of her collegiate career was freshman Kristin Halley (Overland Park, Kan. / St. Thomas Aquinas). The defender scored unassisted on a blast from the right side of the box after weaving her way around several Phoenix defenders. Halley played stopper for a majority of the second frame, helping Marquette to its first shutout of the season.
BETWEEN THE PIPES Junior Mo Bothwell (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) and freshman Ashleigh Koenig (Naperville, Ill. / Central) shared the shutout over the Phoenix. Koenig stopped the lone UW-Green Bay shot of the game for her first collegiate save.
ONE-TIMERS Several other Golden Eagles made key contributions in the 8-0 win over UW-Green Bay ? junior striker Katherine Ward (Trumbull, Conn. / Trumbull) tallied two assists and is third on the team with seven points ? sophomore Anna Frisk (Rochester, N.Y. / Greece Athena) and junior Heather O?Neil (Shoreview, Minn. / Totino-Grace) both moved from the midfield to the backline and helped Marquette shut down the UWGB attack, limiting the Phoenix to only one shot ? sophomore Jenny Strachota (Milwaukee, Wis. / DSHA) started at outside midfield and collected her first point of the season with an assist on Roethe?s goal ? freshman Kate Gordon (Sioux City, Iowa / North) tallied her fifth point of the season with her first collegiate assist on Welch?s second goal ? freshmen Diana Detrie (Green Bay, Wis. / Notre Dame Academy), Jaime Krofta (Dousman, Wis. / Kettle Moraine) and Ashley Spakowitz (Hartland, Wis. / Arrowhead) each collected their first collegiate points, all on assists ? freshmen Jaime Erickson (Milwaukee, Wis. / University School), Michelle George (Madison, Wis. / Edgewood) and Laura Kretsch (Shorewood, Wis. / Shorewood) all made their collegiate debuts on Sunday.
