LAST WEEK The Golden Eagles opened their C-USA schedule with a 1-1 overtime tie at Saint Louis on Fri., Sept. 17. Marquette continued its trend of giving up the first goal, coming from behind to knot the score late in regulation before an indecisive, back-and-forth overtime session. On Sun., Sept. 19, the Golden Eagles struggled to generate good scoring opportunities and fell 1-0 in overtime at Houston. With the loss, Marquette remained winless on the road with an 0-3-1 road record.
A LOOK AT UW-MILWAUKEE UW-Milwaukee took the title at their own UWM PrimeCo Classic this past weekend, defeating Weber State 1-0 on Sat., Sept. 18, and downing Wright State 2-0 on Sun., Sept. 19. Now 4-3, head coach Michael Moynihan?s Panthers are led by junior Stefani Hosni and senior keeper Liz Ulicki. A striker, Hosni was the MVP at the PrimeCo Classic and paces UWM with eight points on three goals and two assists. Ulicki has amassed three shutouts and a 2.33 goals against average while playing all 644 minutes in goal. In his third year at UWM, Moynihan is 27-11-7 (.678) with the Panthers. His career mark is the same. The Panthers took the victory in last season?s 1-0 contest at Valley Fields and lead the all-time series 4-1-1. The last five games between the Golden Eagles and the Panthers have been decided by a goal or less.
A LOOK AT MEMPHIS Head coach Les Szabo?s Lady Tigers (2-4-0, 0-2-0) head into this week with a 2-4-0 record after losing their first two C-USA contests over the weekend. Memphis opened its league slate with a 2-0 loss at home to Tulane on Fri., Sept. 17, and then fell to Southern Miss 3-1 at home on Sun., Sept. 19. Junior midfielder Tori Winslett leads a balanced Memphis offensive attack with seven points, while senior keeper Frances Currin has played all 560 minutes between the pipes, compiling a 1.47 goals against average and 24 saves. Szabo is in his fifth year overall and at Memphis, where he is 31-51-4 ( .384). Marquette has not allowed Memphis a goal in the past two meetings and holds a 5-0 lead in the all-time series. The Golden Eagles won 3-0 in Memphis last season. Memphis hosts Mississippi State on Wed., Sept. 22, before arriving in Milwaukee.
A LOOK AT UAB After struggling through a tough non-conference schedule, coach Paul Harbin?s Blazers (3-5-0, 2-0-0) rebounded with a pair of home wins in the debut weekend of C-USA action. UAB stopped Southern Miss 2-0 on Fri., Sept. 17, and took a 2-1 overtime victory over Tulane on Sun., Sept. 19. Harbin has a 35-28-5 (.551) record in three-plus years in Birmingham. His career mark is 72-54-7 (.568) in eight seasons. UAB features a balanced attack that includes Preseason All-C-USA selections Missy Urbani and Vanessa Woodward. Keepers Jen Braly and Lisa Nowoslawski have split time between the pipes. Collectively, they have two shutouts, 43 saves and a 2.00 GAA. The Blazers and Golden Eagles split a pair of 1998 matches, with Marquette avenging a regular-season loss in Birmingham with a 2-0 win in the quarterfinals of the C-USA Tournament in Farmer?s Branch, Texas.
