THE WEEK AHEAD Markus Roeders? Marquette women?s soccer team (4-4-2, 2-1-1) opens a crucial six-game road stretch this weekend with a pair of Conference USA contests. The Golden Eagles battle the Lady Cards of Louisville on Fri., Oct. 1, at 6 p.m. (CT). Marquette then takes on the Cincinnati Bearcats on Sun., Oct. 3, at noon. The games open a stretch in which the Golden Eagles play six straight road games before returning to Valley Fields on Oct. 22.
LAST WEEK Marquette had a busy week, battling crosstown rival UW-Milwaukee and hosting a pair of C-USA foes. On Tue., Sept. 21, the Golden Eagles and UWM played to a 0-0 tie at Milwaukee?s Uihlein Soccer Park. MU keeper Mo Bothwell (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) tallied her first solo shutout of the season against the Panthers, going the full 120 minutes and making four saves. The four senior co-captains led the way on Fri., Sept. 24, when the Golden Eagles downed Memphis 4-1. Katie Loughran (Cincinnati, Ohio / Ursuline) led a Marquette defense that allowed only one shot, while Erin Morgan (Stevens Point, Wis. / Stevens Point Area), Kelly Roethe (Wauwatosa, Wis. / DSHA) and Lanette Rossini (Roseville, Minn. / Totino-Grace) paced the offense. Morgan was the hero again on Sun., Sept. 26, netting the game-winner in Marquette?s 1-0 victory over C-USA frontrunner UAB.
A LOOK AT LOUISVILLE After finishing the 1998 season with an 0-17-1 mark, the Lady Cards opened this season with a 5-3 win at Morehead State. However, Louisville has lost eight straight since the season-opener and is now 1-8-0 and 0-5-0 in C-USA games. The Lady Cards have struggled offensively again this season, getting five goals in the win over Morehead, but tallying only three goals total and suffering six shutouts during their eight-game losing streak. Sophomore Amber Jolley has found the back of the net four times, though, to lead the Lady Cards with eight points. Keepers Lynn Clashman and Jordan Frederickson have split a hefty work load between the pipes, having allowed 37 goals while making 59 saves to go with a 4.11 goals against average (GAA). Coach Karla Thompson is in her second season at the helm of the Lady Cards and has a 1-25-1 (.056) mark. The all-time series between the C-USA foes is tied at 3-3, but Marquette scored a 3-0 win in Milwaukee last season. The Golden Eagles haven?t allowed a Cardinal goal in their three wins.
A LOOK AT CINCINNATI The dean of C-USA coaches, Bearcat head coach Meridy Glenn is in her 17th year at the Ohio school, where she has recorded a 173-106-23 (.608). This year, her Bearcats are off to a 4-5 overall start, but they are 4-1 at home. UC is 2-3 in the league after this past weekend?s action, when they defeated Saint Louis 1-0 on Fri., Sept. 24, and fell at home to Houston 1-0 on Sun., Sept. 26. Katrina Smolarczyk has played all but six minutes in goal in place of the injured Christy Hoffman this season. The 5-7 freshman has made 33 saves and carries a 1.56 GAA. Preseason All-C-USA selection Amy Rodeheffer leads a balanced Bearcat offense with eight points on three goals and two assists. The 5-8 senior midfielder was an All-C-USA Third Team pick last season. Cincinnati leads the all-time series over Marquette by a 4-3-1 edge, however the Golden Eagles took last year?s victory in Milwaukee by a 2-1 advantage. The Bearcats host DePaul on Fri., Oct. 1, before welcoming Marquette.
HEAD COACH MARKUS ROEDERS Markus Roeders has a 49-17-9 (.713) record in his fourth season as head coach at Marquette. Effective Sept. 1, he started a three-year term as a member of the NCAA Division I Women?s Soccer Committee. A 1990 graduate of UNC Asheville, Roeders earned the 1996 C-USA Coach of the Year Award. POINT FORWARD Morgan had a big weekend for the Golden Eagles. The diminutive striker collected two assists, including the helper on Roethe?s game-winner, against Memphis. She then headed in the game-winner off a cross at the 64:50 mark of the second half to lift the Golden Eagles to a 1-0 win over UAB. The points continued to elevate Morgan up the Marquette all-time scoring charts. She is now third all-time with goals scored, and is in fourth place all-time in both points (54) and assists (16). She is fourth on the team in scoring with nine points this season.
ONE MO? TIME Junior keeper Mo Bothwell (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) registered her first two solo shutouts of the season in the UW-Milwaukee and UAB games last week. She went the full 120 minutes, making four saves and breaking up several other Panther scoring chances, in Tuesday?s tie with UWM. She allowed one goal in 59 minutes in earning the win over Memphis and then had to make only one save in blanking UAB. Bothwell is now 4-4-2 with 2.5 shutouts, 38 saves and a 1.56 GAA in 867 minutes.
RAY OF LIGHT Roethe tallied her first game-winning goal of the season against Memphis. The senior midfielder out-raced the keeper to a loose ball in the box, sliding onto it and sending it between the sliding Memphis? keeper?s legs from 18 yards out. The co-captain leads Marquette with 14 points on five goals and four assists this season. She is Marquette?s all-time leader with 104 points and 41 goals and is second all-time with 22 assists.
INSTANT OFFENSE Katherine Ward (Trumbull, Conn. / Trumbull) put Marquette on the board early against Memphis, netting her second goal of the season at the 6:26 mark. She took a cross from Melissa Moffatt and chipped the UM keeper from four yards out. Ward later added an assist on Moffat?s goal. After coming off the bench a year ago, she has started nine of the ten games this year and has ten points on two goals and a team-best six assists.
M&M?s Marquette?s super-sub a year ago when she filled in at various spots in the lineup, Melissa Moffatt (Waukesha, Wis. / Catholic Memorial) has shown versatility again this season, though in a starting role. The 5-6 Moffatt has been in the opening lineup in all 10 matches this season, at both center back and center midfield. She collected her first points of the season with a goal and an assist against Memphis. Moffatt assisted on Ward?s opening goal of the match and then concluded the scoring with her first goal of the season at the 79:50 mark, blistering a shot to the back of the net from seven yards out.
?NETTE GAINS Rossini tied her classmate Roethe with her fifth goal of the season against Memphis. The wide midfielder sent an intended cross into the box that the Tiger keeper misplayed, dropping it across the goal line for Marquette?s third goal of the evening. Rossini is second on the team in scoring with 11 points in 1999 and also continues to move up the Marquette career scoring lists. She is fourth all-time in both points (48) and goals (17), and is fifth with 14 assists.
