MILWAUKEE (AP) - Brian Wardle scored 12 points to lead Marquette to a 56-38 win over St. Louis Wednesday night - the Billikins' lowest point total in three seasons.
St. Louis (7-6 overall, 0-2 in Conference USA) shot 24.5 percent from the field in equaling the low-point total they posted in a loss to Southern Illinios during the 1996-97 season.
Their previous low prior to that was 34 points in the 1957-58 season. Against Marquette, it took a pair of 3-pointers by Justin Love in the final 2:30 to top that mark.
Marquette (8-4, 1-0) limited St. Louis to 27.3 percent shooting in the first half, taking a 29-15 lead at intermission.
St. Louis closed to within 10 points briefly in the second half, but the Golden Eagles pulled away with a 13-0 burst midway through the period to open up a 50-28 lead, and from that point St. Louis was playing only to avoid an embarrassing landmark.
John Cliff and Oluoma Nnamaka added 10 points apiece for the Golden Eagles.
Marquette, far and away last in C-USA in turnover ratio at minus-4.18, was plus-4 in the first half.
Jon Harris had five offensive rebounds and seven overall in the half. He finished with 10 for the game but was held scoreless.
Love, St. Louis' leading scorer averaging 17.8 points per game, did not start and had just five points at the half but finished with 17, thanks to a late flurry. Justin Tatum added 12.
