Roeders Selected as C-USA Coach of the Year

CHICAGO - Marquette head coach Markus Roeders claimed Conference USA Coach of the Year honors after leading Marquette to its third regular season title. (16-2-1, 10-0-1). The Golden Eagles opened the season by winning four of their first five matches and won eight straight matches from Sept. 15-Oct. 4. Roeders has compiled a overall record of 77-22-10 in five seasons as head coach. Last season, he led MU to the Conference USA Tournament title and first round, four overtime NCAA Tournament victory over Missouri. Roeders was also named Conference USA Coach of the Year in 1996.
Eight Marquette players were named to the league's four all-conference teams. Four players were named to the first team squad -- sophomore Kate Gordon (Sioux City, Iowa), senior Rhegan Hyypio (St. Petersburg, Fla.), senior Heather O'Neil (Shoreview, Minn.) and freshman Kristen Jensen (Shorewood, Ill.). Two MU players were named second-team all C-USA -- Stephanie Welch (Worthington, Ohio) and Erin Maysent (Ames, Iowa). While no MU players were named third-team all-conference, three players were named to the all-freshman team -- Jensen, Carolyn Klopp (Glendale, Wis.) and Anne Ioder (Hartland, Wis.).
Jill Currie of Charlotte was named C-USA Player of the Year, marking the third straight season that a Charlotte player has won the award. Saint Louis goal keeper Meghann Burke was named Defensive Player of the Year. Burke led the conference in goals against average and was among the national leaders in that category. Memphis forward Jessica Gjertsen was named freshman of the year after leading the conference in points, goals and goals per game.
Marquette begins the Conference USA Tournament on Wed., Nov. 1 at noon when it faces South Florida.
