IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Iowa women's basketball team defeated Marquette in both team'sseason opener, 70-57, Friday night in Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City.
It was a very balanced attack for the both teams. Marquette's Heidi Bowman led the Golden Eagles with 11 points. Four other players scored seven or more points. Freshman Kelly Schwerman added eight points off the bench. Freshman Kristin Cuff and Crystal Weaver also added seven points off the bench. Junior center Sarah Zawodny scored seven points as well.
Iowa had six players scoring eight or more points. Lindsey Meder led the way with 18 points. Randi Peterson netted a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Cara Consuegra had 12 points and three assists.
It was a tale of two halves for the Hawkeyes, as it looked like Marquette may have an easy night during the first frame. The Golden Eagles led almost the whole way, getting up as much as 13 points in the opening half.
In the second half, Iowa came to life behind the hot shooting of Meder. Three free throws from Consuegra at the 7:15 mark gave Iowa the lead and they never looked back.
Marquette wouldn't go away, but the Hawkeyes answered every time down the court and hit their free throws in the final minutes to take the 13 point win.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 21, against UW-Milwaukee at 7 p.m. at the U.S. Cellular Arena.
