Marquette Women Win Home Opener, 59-43

MILWAUKEE - A tradition was continued Tuesday night at the U.S. Cellular Arena as two cross town rivals, Marquette and UW-Milwaukee met for the 33rd time in their school's history. Marquette outscored UWM 16-2 in the final8:26 seconds to secure a convincing 59-43 victory and to secure the Golden Eagles home winning streak of 22 games.
Marquette senior Heidi Bowman(Piercy, Calif.) scored a game high 18 points, including 2 for 5 for threepointers.
"I was open a couple of times and my teammates found me, it was as simple as that," said Bowman.
"Heidi is obviously a senior and a leader," said Marquette coach Terri Mitchell who earned her first victory ofthe season with the win. "She really stepped it up tonight for us. I just told her to be a leader tonight."
Down by a score of 27-25 at the half, Marquette turned up the defense and held UWM to 20 percent shooting and only seven field goals.
"We are finding that the defense can never let down. That is an improvement from last game. We never panicked throughout the game," said Mitchell.
Marquette tied the game at 31 withKristin Seffern's (Van Dyne, Wis.) jumper two minutes into the half. Kristi Johnson's (Holmren, Wis.) jumper with 13:09 in the second half put the Golden Eagles up 39-38, the team never looked back from there. They scored 20 of the games final 25 points to win the game. Johnson, a senior, finished the game with seven points. Junior Sarah Zawodny (Beavercreek,Ohio) came of off the bench tonight and scored six points and grabbed seven rebounds in 17 minutes.
"I think it is important to find who can spark us off of the bench and I tried to change the line up a little bit tonight and I think it helped," added Mitchell.
The Golden Eagles will be in action again Friday at 5:35 p.m. (CST) playing in California against Northern Iowa.
