Each week, senior thrower Lori Perrie will share her thoughts on the 2000 Golden Eagle Season. Here is this week's entry:
The Iowa State Cyclones held an impressive meet this past weekend. There were 43 men's and 33 women's teams present. The Marqette Women's Track and Field Team made a strong showing and turned a lot of heads.
Highlighting the meet was sophomore Jennifer Batie, who placed third overall in the 400m. She set a school record, seasonal best and personal best record in her effort. She also was a member of the (school) record-breaking 4x400m relay team along with her sister Jeannette, FlaTria Horne and Sher-ree Beekman. FlaTria also placed fifth in the 60m dash. Meagan Kosman, a junior heptathlete, broke her own school record in the pole vault with a vault of 10' 4". This broke her old record by 1'4". With performances like these, Conference USA rivals should be a little worried. Gina Lambert has become consistent at clearing the bar at 5'5" in the high jump and it is only a matter of time before she soars to greater heights. I watched her competition and she was VERY close at the 5'7" mark.
We also had some first-class finishes in the distance events. Standing out was junior Erika Jacobson, who finished fifth overall in the 3K race while teammates Jessie Swan and Susan Barth finish 7th and 8th, respectively.
All three of these girls ran personal bests in these events. Actually more than 75% of the team achieved personal bests in their individual events. I have only mentioned those who placed in the top eight or broke school records. The women are looking very strong and very ready for the Conference USA Indoor Championships to be held in two weeks at DePaul. This week some members of the team will compete at a smaller meet at Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and the rest will get a weekend off. Also of special note, once again, is Julie Sorrentino, who travelled to
Nebraska over the weekend to the Husker invitational. Althogh placing only 10th, she broke her own school record with a throw of 57' 7 3/4", which qualifies her for the USATF Indoor National Championships in Atlanta Next month.
