MILWAUKEE - Marquette University senior Lisa Oldenburg (West Allis, Wis. / Hale) was named to the 1999 GTE Academic All-District V Women's Basketball University Division First Team earlier this week. The senior captain, who earned Second Team accolades last season, earned the selection in a vote of district sports information directors and staffs. District V encompasses University Division (Division I) schools from Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ontario and Manitoba.
"Lisa epitomizes the term student-athlete," Marquette head coach Terri Mitchell said. "Through hard work and effort, she has taken advantage of every opportunity that has been given to her at Marquette, both on the court and in the classroom. Any awards or honors that she gets, whether they be for athletic or academic accomplishments, are well-deserved."
While majoring in both English and physical therapy, Oldenburg carries a 3.60 grade point average. She is a three-time member of the C-USA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll. A 6-2 senior forward, Oldenburg is one of only two players to have started all 27 games for Marquette this season. She leads Marquette with 1.6 blocks and 2.1 steals per game, and a 56% field goal percentage. Oldenburg also sports impressive averages of 16.1 points, 7.1 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game, and is converting 71% of her free throw attempts. She is the only player in C-USA to rank among the Top 15 in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage, free throw percentage, steals and blocks.
Oldenburg moved into fourth place on Marquette's all-time career scoring list this past weekend at DePaul and now has 1,619 points. She moved into sixth place on the all-time rebounding list on Jan. 20, and has 817 career boards. Her 54% career field goal percentage ranks her at the top of Marquette's all-time list in that category, and she is third in the blocked shots Top 10 with 142 blocks.
Oldenburg and the Golden Eagles concluded the regular season with a 22-5 record and earned their first ever outright Conference USA regular-season championship. Marquette goes into this weekend's C-USA Tournament at the University of Louisville's Freedom Hall as the #1 seed. The Golden Eagles have an opening round bye and open tournament play on Sat., March 4, when they will face the winner of Friday's #8 UAB/#9 Saint Louis game.
