Each week, senior thrower Lori Perrie will share her thoughts on the 2000 Golden Eagle Season. Here is this week's entry:
Hello everyone! I suppose many of you thought I fell off the face of the earth or something since I haven't written in a while. I apologize sincerely about that. During spring break, I thought very little about school, sorry to say.
The Conference USA Indoor Championships were held in Chicago at DePaul University on February 26 and 27. Marquette made a very strong showing for itself. I am very impressed with all of my teammates. The team as a whole placed fourth out of all of the Conference teams. Individually, athletes of note included Susan Barth, Jennifer Batie, FlaTria Horne, and Erika Jacobson.
Freshman distance runner Susan Barth, competed in both the 5000m and 3000m runs and placed 2nd and 4th, respectively. She was named the Conference USA Female Freshman of the Year. I think this is outstanding. Susan is a tremendous athlete and being only a freshman, I think Marquette can expect great things to come.
Jennifer Batie won the 400m sprint with a time of 55.00 seconds, which was a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Indoor Championships. This was an awesome race to watch. Jennifer blew the competition away! She was also a part of the silver medal winning 4x400m relay team. Her teammates included Sher-ree Beekman, FlaTria Horne and Jeannette Batie. The team set a school record in the event with a time of 3:49.99. These girls were smokin'! Another great race to watch.
FlaTria Horne also had a great weekend individually, placing second in the 55m dash with a time of 6.95sec. and third in the 200m dash with a time of 24.77sec. Both of these times were new school records.
Erika Jacobson took the silver in the 3000m race with a time of 9:59.94 and looked strong doing it. It is kind of hard for me to get excited about watching a long distance race because they have to run sooooo many laps, but Erika and Susan's races were great to watch. These two girls are very strong runners and I think they will do some damage outdoors as well.
Julie Sorrentino competed in an awesome 20-lb weight throw competition that went to the very last throws to determine the winner. No one was a clear winner until the last throw had been taken. Julie ended up taking third with a throw of 17.42m (57'2"). Julie has come a long way this season, just really learning the event. She still has two more years to work on it. I think she'll be a force to reckon with during her future at Marquette.
Also, I want to mention the performance of Bethany Harry in the 5000m run where she placed fifth and ran a season and personal best time of 17:42.43.
I want to wish the entire team congratulations and to all of the returning athletes to kick some butt next year when all of us seniors are gone. After being here for close to four years now, the increasing calibre of this team is evident. The Conference itself is so much stronger now, and our team is getting stronger, too. I hope every member of the women's team is proud of themselves and their efforts because it was a job well done!!
