Each week, senior thrower Lori Perrie will share her thoughts on the 2000 Golden Eagle Season. Here is this week's entry:
This past weekend six members of the women's track and field team made the trek to Tuscon, Arizona, for our first outdoor meet of the year. The weather was sooo beautiful, that I think many of us were dreading coming back to Milwaukee's gray and rainy forecast.
While there, the women made a decent showing. Senior high jumper Gina Lambert placed fifth in her event, leaping over the bar at 1.65m. Although I didn't see her competiton due to a competition of my own, I was told that she was very close to clearing that next height.
Junior sprinter FlaTria Horne competed in the 100, 200 and 4x400m relay. In the 100m, she placed fifth with a time of 12.01 seconds. In the 200, she placed sixth with a time of 24.77sec. FlaTria, along with Jennifer and Jeannette Batie, and Sher-ree Beekman took the bronze in the relay, running a time of 3:46.92, which puts them second on the all-time list at Marquette. Jennifer also competed in the 200 and 400m sprints finishing with times of 25.10sec and a third-place time of 55.65sec, respectively. Sister Jeannette ran the 100 and 400m hurdles in 14.90sec and 1:02.44. She placed seventh in the longer of the two. Sher-ree Beekman competed in the 100 and 200m sprints also and placed seventh in the 100m, running a personal best-time of 12.31sec.
I was the only female thrower to make the trip and I represented the group fairly well. I broke my own MU Hammer record and placed third with a throw of 166'9" (50.82m) after throwing one off a steel light post and one off a large wooden post outside the sectors. In the shot put I placed fourth with a toss of 13.60m (44'7 1/4"). I also competed in the discus and, well, we don't need to talk about that right now. It didn't go so well.
Coming up next for the Golden Eagles is a trip to Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. As far as I know, we are taking the whole team and will compete this Friday and Saturday, March 24 and 25. This meet should give us an inkling of how the season will look as we work our way towards the Conference USA Outdoor Championships at Tulane University in New Orleans May 10-13.
