MILWAUKEE - Marquette University senior Kelly Roethe (Wauwatosa, Wis. / DSHA) was named to the 1999-2000 GTE Academic All-District V Women's Fall/Winter At-Large University Division First Team today. The senior captain, who also earned First Team accolades as a sophomore and junior, earned the selection in a vote of district sports information directors and staffs. District V encompasses University Division (Division I) schools from Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ontario and Manitoba.
"Kelly has raised the bar at Marquette," said Marquette head coach Markus Roeders. "She helped take our program to another level while improving in each of her four seasons and her level of achievement carried over to the classroom. The standards she set both on and of the field will be hard to surpass."
A biology major, Roethe carries a 3.73 grade point average. She is a three-time member of the Conference USA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll and has twice been named as the C-USA Women's Soccer Scholar Athlete of the Year.
The Golden Eagles' and Conference USA's all-time leading scorer, Roethe capped off an illustrious four-year career by leading Marquette to its first-ever C-USA title and NCAA Tournament. The senior midfielder was twice named to the NSCAA All-Great Lakes Region First Team and was a four-time selection for the All-C-USA First Team. Roethe finished her career with 123 points, 49 goals and 25 assists in 90 career games, 89 of which she started. Besides being Marquette's all-time leader in points, she also is ranked first all-time in career goals, game-winning goals, games played and games started.
Roethe led the Golden Eagles to a 16-7-2 record this past season. They defeated UNC Charlotte 2-1 in overtime to claim the C-USA Tournament title. After knocking off #21 Missouri 3-2 in four overtimes in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, Marquette dropped a 1-0 decision at #8 Clemson.
