MILWAUKEE -
UP NEXT Head coach Tim Grogan's Marquette golf team has a little over a week off before heading south for the Conference USA Championship in Navarrre, Fla., April 17-19.
LAST TIME OUT Marquette continued its recent run of success in Madison, Ill., on Mon.-Tue., April 3-4, earning the team championship at Saint Louis' Billiken Intercollegiate. The Golden Eagles tallied a top score of 597 (286-311) over two rounds at Gateway National Golf Course to win their first tournament of the season. Led by three individual Top 10 finishers, Marquette out-scored Southeast Missouri State by two strokes. The Golden Eagles staked claim to the title on the opening day with their tournament-low score of 286, six strokes less than any of the other schools in the 12-team field.
Junior Mark Wentz (DeForest, Wis. / DeForest) fired a blistering 68 on the opening day of action en route to a total score of 147. Despite the tournament-low round of 68, which was three-under par, Wentz finished in a three-way tie for first and lost a playoff to Southeast Missouri's David Fulton. Wentz' 68 was a low-round score this year for Marquette, however, and is a career-best for the junior from DeForest, Wis.
Close behind Wentz were senior Tim Jacobs (McHenry, Ill. / McHenry) and junior Edvins Erkmanis (Franklin, Wis. / Martin Luther), each of whom tied for sixth with a score of 150. Marc Fisher (Pierrefonds, Quebec / Notre-Dame) and Brad White (Lake Geneva, Wis. / Badger) also turned in solid outings for the Golden Eagles.
Marquette's team score was +29 for the tournament.
