MILWAUKEE - The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee recently announced that Marquette University senior Lisa Oldenburg (West Allis, Wis. / Hale) has been named as a recipient of a $5,000 scholarship for part-time or full-time postgraduate study at the university or professional school of her choice. As an At-Large recipient, she is one of only 16 women's basketball student-athletes from Divisions I, II and III to earn the Postgraduate Scholarship.
"Lisa represents the spirit and reality of the student-athlete," said Marquette Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Bill Cords. "This award is a testimony to her commitment and dedication as a student-athlete and as a person."
The NCAA awards 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women. The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are in their last year of intercollegiate athletics competition.
One-time grants of $5,000 each are presented to 35 football participants, 32 (16 men and 16 women) basketball players and 107 (36 men and 71 women) varsity student-athletes who compete in sports other than football and basketball and in which the NCAA conducts national championships. A proportionate number of awards in each category are allocated for Divisions I, II and III, with the remaining at-large scholarships selected without division restriction. The scholarships are one-time, nonrenewable grants.
Eligibility is restricted to student-athletes at NCAA member institutions who, in their final year of eligibility, have performed with distinction as members of varsity teams in the sport for which they were nominated. Nominees must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.0 (based on a 4.0 scale), be nominated by the faculty athletics representative or athletics director, and intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time graduate student. The student-athlete must begin use of the award no later than the Spring semester 2004-05 academic year. In the event that she cannot use the scholarship, it will be offered to an alternate.
While majoring in both English and physical therapy, Oldenburg carries a 3.60 grade point average. She is enrolled in the Master's in Physical Therapy program, which is a six-year program at Marquette. She is a three time member of the C-USA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll.
"She epitomizes the term student-athlete," Marquette head coach Terri Mitchell said. "Through hard work and effort, Lisa has taken advantage of every opportunity that has been given to her at Marquette, both on the court and in the classroom. Any awards or honors that she gets, whether they be for athletic or academic accomplishments, are well-deserved."
A 6-2 senior forward, Oldenburg is one of only two players to have started all 29 games for Marquette this season. She led Marquette with 16.2 points, 1.7 blocks and 2.0 steals per game, and a 56% field goal percentage. Oldenburg also sported impressive averages of 7.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game, and converted 73% of her free throw attempts. She was the only player in C-USA to rank among the Top 15 in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage, free throw percentage, steals and blocks. She was named to the All-C-USA Second Team for the third consecutive year following the season.
Oldenburg finished her career ranked on 11 of Marquette's All-Time career Top 10s. She is the program's all-time leader in field goal percentage, having shot 54% from the field over her four seasons. Oldenburg is fourth on the career scoring chart with 1,655 points, sixth on the career rebounding chart with 832 and third in each of the following categories: free throws made (363), free throws attempted (494), blocks (148) and games played (118).
Oldenburg and the Golden Eagles concluded the season with a 22-7 record and earned their first-ever outright Conference USA regular-season championship. Marquette also earned its first ever national ranking and advanced to its record fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament during the 1999-2000 season.
