Aug. 23, 2000
Under the direction of fifth year head coach Markus Roeders, Marquette enters the year with expectations of success. The Golden Eagles enter the 2000 season fresh off of a visit to the NCAA tournament in 1999, the first for the program.
The same expectations will be set for this year's unit. The first step to returning to the NCAA tournament comes in the form of Tennessee. The Lady Vols and Golden Eagles are slated to kick off Friday, Aug. 25, at 8:15 p.m. (CDT) at Valley Fields on the Marquette campus.
The team returns to action two days later with intrastate rival Wisconsin in a neutral site match. The Eagles and Badgers will square off at UW-Milwaukee's Englemann Field on Sunday, Aug. 27. Match time is set for 2:30 p.m.
SCOUTING TENNESSEE
Tennessee had high expectations in 1999, earning a top-25 ranking from Soccer America, but finished the season under .500 at 8-11-1. Again, expectations are high for the Lady Vols. First-year head coach Angela Kelly makes her intercollegiate coaching debut against Marquette. Tennessee is a relatively young team. Kelly recruited 12 newcomers, adding to the 12 veterans who return for 2000. The Vols return four of their top six scorers from last season, including junior Jen Laughridge (13 points on three goals and seven assists), senior Laura Lauter Smith (five goals, 11 points), senior Kelly Berrall (five assists, nine points) and junior Tara Minnax (three goals).
Last time: Tennessee defeated Marquette, 4-2, last season in Knoxville.
Series History: Tennessee leads, 1-0.
SCOUTING WISCONSIN
Two days after opening the season at UW-Milwaukee, Wisconsin meets Marquette in the second match of the season for both squads. The Badgers ended the 1999 string with a 9-8-4 record and missed the NCAA tournament for the second time in the last seven years. Head coach Dean Duerst, in his seventh season, welcomes the return of junior forward Allison Wagner. One of the most prolific scorers in Wisconsin history, Wagner needs four goals to move into second on the all-time goal scoring list at UW. The Badgers will look to solidify a goalkeeper with the graduation of three-year starter Briget Schwarting.
Last time: Wisconsin upended Marquette, 2-1, in Milwaukee in 1999.
Series History: Wisconsin leads, 3-1-1.
HEAD COACH MARKUS ROEDERS
Markus Roeders has a 61-20-9 (.728) record in his fifth season as head coach at Marquette. His 1999 squad became the first in school history to advance to the NCAA Tournament. There, the Golden Eagles won the first round contest, 3-2, over Missouri before falling to Clemson, 1-0. He guided the 1999 team to a Conference USA Tournament championship prior to the NCAA Tournament bid.
Roeders has led Marquette to 10 wins or more in each of his four previous season. He directed the Golden Eagles to a pair of regular-season C-USA titles in 1996 and 1997, and he led Marquette to appearances in the C-USA title game in each of his four seasons. Roeders begins his second year as a member of the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Committee. A 1990 graduate of UNC-Asheville, Roeders earned the 1996 C-USA Coach of the Year Award. Prior to taking over the reigns of the women's program, Roeders served for two seasons as an assistant coach for the Marquette men's team under his collegiate coach, Steve Adlard. Roeders played his final two seasons at UNC-Asheville and was team captain as a senior. He is assisted by Frank Pelaez and Dan Holcomb.
IN THE POLLS
Marquette sits on the outskirts of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas Top 25, the official rankings as denoted by the NCAA. As a team also receiving votes, a solid start could earn the Golden Eagles a spot in the national rankings. Two of Marquette's 2000 opponents are in the list of the best teams in the nation. Currently, Sept. 22 opponent Brigham Young is ranked 20th, while Oct. 6 foe UCLA is ranked 14th.
In 1999, Marquette finished the season ranked ninth in the Great Lakes Region. The regional polls have yet to be released. In the Soccer Buzz regional poll, Marquette is ranked fourth in the Great Lakes Region behind Notre Dame, Kentucky and Michigan.
HYYPIO NAMED PRESEASON ALL-C-USA
Rhegan Hyypio was named to the preseason All-Conference USA team as voted on by the league's coaches. The senior leader of the Marquette defense has two previous post-season C-USA credits to her resume. As a junior, Hyypio was named second team all-conference. Following a stellar sophomore season, Hyypio was tagged as the best defender in all of Conference USA in addition to her first-team all-C-USA status. As a freshman, Hyypio was named the MVP of the Conference USA post-season tournament and was named to the all-Freshman team.
EAGLES FOLLOW SAINT LOUIS AS FAVORITE
Conference USA coaches have selected Saint Louis as the favorite to win the league in 2000, but Marquette is a close second according to the league. The expectations of the coaches are similar to the final standings of 1999. The league regular-season champion in 1999, Saint Louis is expected to repeat in that role. Tournament champion and regular-season runner-up Marquette is favored to be second again. Coaches have Charlotte and Houston, who tied Marquette for second last year, challenging the Billikens and Golden Eagles for the league crown.
MARQUETTE TUNES UP FOR REGULAR SEASON
The Marquette women's soccer team came out on the short end of a 2-1 decision to Illinois in an exhibition match on Aug. 19 at the Illinois Soccer Field.
Illinois got on the board first with 2:15 remaining in the opening half when sophomore Meghan Kolze pounced on a loose ball in front of the Marquette goal and flicked it in. The Illini had the Golden Eagles bottled up for most of the opening 45 minutes and enjoyed a 5-1 edge in shots.
In the second half, Marquette was able to regroup and mount a more consistent offensive attack. However, the Golden Eagles fell behind, 2-0, at the 70:27 mark of the match when Tara Schuling converted on a penalty-kick situation. MU countered less than two minutes later and cut the lead in half at 72:15 when sophomore Erin Maysent guided in a shot from a tough angle on the right side. Marquette rotated three goalkeepers with senior Mo Bothwell (Carmel, Ind.) playing the first 36 minutes.
