Milwaukee - The Marquette women's basketball team pursues a fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament with a schedule that includes 14 home contests, games with five NCAA tournament teams -- Notre Dame, Brigham Young, Michigan, UAB, and Tulane -- from a year ago, and the Conference USA Postseason tournament.
Head coach Terri Mitchell enters her fifth season as the head coach and has put together a daunting schedule filled with difficult non-conference foes and the always difficult Conference-USA slate. The highlight of the schedule is the conference tournament which the Golden Eagles will host on March 2-5 at the U.S. Cellular Arena.
" We've had an outstanding schedule in previous years, and this year is no different," Mitchell stated. "Our fans should be very pleased with our home schedule as we bring in some of the finest teams in the nation and host the conference championships. Fans from across the city and the state should want to see Marquette women's basketball."
The season begins with Big-10 foe Iowa in Iowa City on Nov. 17. The Golden Eagles open the home schedule with a contest against cross-town rival UW-Milwaukee. A holiday trip the St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic in Moraga, Calif., and a game with Syracuse on Nov. 28 concludes the first month of the season.
After a Dec. 2 meeting with Oregon State and a Dec. 5 game at Dayton, the Golden Eagles enter the most difficult string of non-conference play as they meet three NCAA teams from a year ago in consecutive games. The stretch begins on Dec. 10 as Michigan comes to the Bradley Center. On Dec. 19, Marquette visits Brigham Young. That string comes to a conclusion on Dec. 21 as Marquette hosts Notre Dame, the fifth-ranked team in last year's final poll.
"Having a younger team than in previous years, we want to show them what quality college basketball is about before the conference season starts," Mitchell said. "We want our team ready to play before we begin playing in one of the toughest conferences in the country,"
Marquette begins its conference play on Dec. 30 at DePaul. After a one game break from conference play with a Jan. 2 contest against Colorado State, the Golden Eagles begin a series of 15 C-USA games with a visit to UAB, an NCAA tournament participant last season, on Jan. 5. The Golden Eagles host four straight conference games -- Memphis on Jan. 8, Cincinnati on Jan. 12, Louisville on Jan. 14 and DePaul on Jan. 21.
Following a set of two road games at Charlotte on Jan. 26 and at Saint Louis on Jan. 28, Marquette hosts NCAA tournament team Tulane on Feb. 2 and Southern Miss on Feb. 4. The Golden Eagles then embark on a four-game road trip, the longest of the year. The road trip is highlighted by a contest on Feb. 8 at Louisville. The women tip off at 5:15 p.m. (6:15 p.m. EST) and are followed by the Marquette and Louisville men at 8 p.m. (9 p.m. EST). The road trip also consists of a Feb. 11 game at Cincinnati, a Feb. 16 contest at Houston and a Feb. 18 game at South Florida.
Marquette concludes its regular season with a game at the Milwaukee Auditorium on Feb. 23 against Saint Louis and a game on Feb. 25 at the Bradley Center against Charlotte.
The Golden Eagles play exhibition contests at the U.S. Cellular Arena on Nov. 6 against Gustino Powerbasket of Austria and on Nov. 11 against the Chicago Challengers.
