Milwaukee -- The Marquette University men's golf team opens fall competition this Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 9-10) when it takes part in the Badger Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin. The 54-hole tournament will be played at the par-72, 6,888-yard University Ridge Golf Course located in Verona. Saturday's play is comprised of 36 holes with the tourney concluding on Sunday with 18 holes.
The Golden Eagles will be one of 15 teams competing in this year's field. Some of the other squads taking part include Arizona State, Penn State, Wisconsin, the Air Force Academy and Notre Dame.
Marquette head Coach Tim Grogan will rely heavily on a trio of veterans as part of his five-man entry to the tourney. Seniors Edvins Erkmanis (Franklin), Brad White (Lake Geneva) and Mark Wentz (DeForest) all have plenty of experience and should give MU solid performances.
University Ridge has served as the site of some major college competitions including the 1998 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship and the 2000 Big Ten Women's Golf Championship. The last major men's collegiate tournament held there was the 1995 Big Ten Championship.
Following this weekend's play, the next action for the Golden Eagle linksters will be Sept. 23-24 when they compete at the Hawkeye Invitational hosted by the University of Iowa.
