MILWAUKEE - Soccer Buzz Magazine recently announced its postseason women's soccer honors. Four Marquette players and its head coach were distinguished.
Sophomore forward Kate Gordon (Sioux City, Iowa) was named to the All-Great Lakes Region First Team and was named as a Third-Team All-American. Gordon scored 17 goals on the year to set a Marquette single-season record. Her 40 points were also a single-season mark. Now third on the all-time MU goals list, Gordon was previously named to the NSCAA First-Team All-Great Lakes Region team and was named a Second-Team All-American by the NSCAA.
Senior defender Rhegan Hyypio (St. Petersburg, Fla.) also was named a First-Team All-Great Lakes Region member. Hyypio also was named the Great Lakes Region's Defender of the Year. A member of the Soccer Buzz Honorable Mention All-American Team, Hyypio's honors have grown. She was named First-Team All-Region and First-Team All-American by the NSCAA. Hyypio was fourth on the team with five goals and was part of a stingy Marquette defense that recorded 10 shutouts on the year.
Senior defender Heather O'Neil (Shoreview, Minn.) joins Hyypio and Gordon on the All-Great Lakes Region Squad. O'Neil was named to the third team. She received the same honor from the NSCAA. O'Neil scored two goals on the year, but it was her play on the defensive end that earned her postseason honors.
Freshman midfielder Kristen Jensen (Shorewood, Ill.) was named to Soccer Buzz's All-Great Lakes Region Freshman Team. A First-Team All-Conference USA performer, Jensen started 20 matches for Marquette, scoring three goals and 12 points.
Head coach Markus Roeders was named as the Great Lakes Region's Coach of the Year by Soccer Buzz. Roeders led Marquette to its second NCAA Tournament Bid and advanced to the second round. His Golden Eagles set a school record with 20 wins and were just one of four teams in the country to top the 20-win plateau. Roeders was also honored as the Coach of the Year in Conference USA.
