BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Holding the nation's second leading scorer, Deanna Jackson 20 points below her scoring average seemed to give Marquette the advantage over UAB. However, the UAB (10-3, 2-0 C-USA) defense stifled the Marquette (4-9, 0-2 C-USA) offense and came up with the win, 64-55, in a Conference USA women's basketball game.
The Blazers opened the first half without Jackson who picked up three fouls in the first half, but the UAB defense was able to hold Marquette without a field goal for the first 8:21 of the second half and extended its halftime lead from 12 to 19 points.
Jackson was held by Marquette to just nine points and didn't get her first field goal until the 10:22 mark of the second half.
"We did everything we wanted to do in changing defenses to stop a great player and we succeeded," head coach Terri Mitchell said. "Defensively, I was proud of our effort in holding a high scoring team to 11 points under their average."
UAB's other inside players stepped up and picked up where Jackson wasn't able to supply her usual amount of points. Freshman forward Natasha Thomas led all UAB scorers with 15 points. Junior center Shaquetta Rhodes added 13 points.
"While we stopped Jackson, they do have other offensive threats on their team," Mitchell added.
Marquette senior forward Heidi Bowman did show a spark in the second half, adding nine second half points for a team high 15 points. One bright spot in the second half was the play of a pair of freshmen. Forward Becky Stieber scored eight of her career high 10 in the second half and guard ="">
