MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Marquette women's soccer team handed East Carolina a 2-0 loss at Valley Fields on Oct. 14 as part of a women's and men's soccer doubleheader. Marquette, ranked 18th in the country, improves to 10-2 and 6-0 in C-USA. East Carolina falls to 7-5 and 4-2 in conference play.
Marquette showed its offensive firepower early. Sophomore midfielder Anne Ioder (Hartland, Wis.) scored MU's first goal of the contest in the 33rd minute. She placed a right foot shot off the left upright and into the goal after receiving an pass from senior forward Jill Vendetti (Franklin, Mass.). Marquette could have been up 2-0 at this point had an offsides call not nullified a goal in the ninth minute.
The Golden Eagles put the match away late. In the 89th minute, junior forward Kate Gordon (Sioux City, Iowa) scored her fifth goal of the season on an assist from sophomore midfielder Kristin Jensen (Shorewood, Ill.).
"We were happy with what we did today. We keep improving with each match," head coach Markus Roeders said. "It was a solid performance considering we came off a huge win on Friday."
Marquette came up with two key wins in conference this weekend, downing Charlotte on Friday, who was in a first-place tie with Marquette, and beating East Carolina, who was one game behind the Golden Eagles.
"It was a big weekend for us with the two huge wins against teams in the top four in the conference standings," Roeders said. "We go on the road for two conference games that will be challenging."
Marquette hits the road for its next match on Friday, Oct. 19 at C-USA co-leader Cincinnati. That match starts at 7 p.m. (EST).
