Harvard, ranked 23rd to begin the 2001 season, made the most of its home field advantage to defeat 17th ranked Marquette, 2-1, in double overtime. Harvard is currently unranked, despite raising its record to 5-1 after today's victory. Marquette sees its eight-match winning streak come to an end as its record becomes 8-2.
Harvard scored first, netting the only goal in the first half. Forward Joey Yenne was the recipient of a pass from Beth Totman and beat the defense to blast home the first goal of the contest.
Marquette responded in the 67th minute. Sophomore midfielder Kristen Jensen (Shorewood, Ill) scored her second goal of the season, both penalty kicks, to tie the contest at 1-1.
Both team's goalkeepers and defenses held the opposition at bay for the remainder of the second half and the first overtime period. Sophomore goalkeeper Ashleigh Koenig (Naperville, Ill.) finished the contest with 12 saves. Her counterpart, Cheryl Gunther, finished the match with five saves. The Harvard defense added two saves.
Four minutes into the second overtime period, Harvard scored the match winner. Liza Barber scored the winning tally off a corner play fed in by Orly Ripmaster.
