MILWAUKEE - A goal in the 13th minute by Michigan forward Abby Crumpton stood up as the Wolverines (13-8-1) downed Marquette (16-6) by a score of 1-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship at Valley Fields.
"We played well from start to finish," said Michigan head coach Debbie Rademacher. "We were aware of the home field advantage that Marquette would have. We didn't let that effect our play at all"
Crumpton took a long feed from Michigan goalkeeper Suzie Grech, one touched it on a hop and then played it to the right post past Marquette keeper Ashleigh Koenig. The goal was Crumpton's 13th on the year. The assist was the second of the year for the Michigan netminder.
"Crumpton is their goal scorer," said Marquette head coach Markus Roeders. "We didn't win a ball we should have won. A game like this often comes down to one goal."
Marquette and Michigan played an otherwise even contest. Both teams took nine shots and both goalkeepers made nine saves.
Michigan advances on to play Dartmouth on Sunday, Nov. 18 at 1 p.m. at Valley Fields. Dartmouth defeated Wis.-Milwaukee, 1-0, in double overtime earlier in the day to advance.
