Series Notes - Marquette leads the all-time series against Chicago State by a 4-0 margin ... The series started during the 1989-90 season with MU posting a 77-45 win in Milwaukee ... The last meeting took place on Nov. 20, 1999 when MU posted a 62-43 win over the Cougars in Tom Crean's first game as the Marquette head coach ... Current Golden Eagles who saw action in that game included Oluoma Nnamaka (6 pts., 9 rebs.), Cordell Henry (11 pts off the bench), Jon Harris ( 4 pts., 10 rebs.) and David Diggs.
Marquette Head Coach Tom Crean
Tom Crean is in his third season as the head coach of the Golden Eagles' program. Last year, he directed the program to a record of 15-14 including a 9-7 mark in C-USA play, good for third place in the American Division. The nine wins in the conference marked the most wins by a Marquette team in C-USA since 1996-97 when that team posted a 9-5 showing. Included in the team's victory total from a year ago were sweeps of American Division foes Cincinnati, DePaul and Saint Louis, along with a key triumph at Memphis. The sweep against UC marked the first time a C-USA team had come away with a regular-season sweep against the Bearcats, while the wins over SLU marked the first time since 1997 that the Golden Egles had swept that series. In his initial year, Crean (Central Michigan, '89) guided Marquette to an overall record of 15-14 that included a berth to the NIT, the school's 13th appearance in that tournament. In C-USA play, Crean led MU to an 8-8 record, good for fourth place in the American Division. In games played in Milwaukee, Crean stands 23-10 (22-8 at the Bradley Center, 1-2 at the Milwaukee Arena). Prior to being named the school's head coach on March 30, 1999, he served as an assistant for 10 seasons. His coaching resum? includes stops at Michigan State (1989-90), Western Kentucky (1990-94), Pittsburgh (1994-95) and most recently again at Michigan State (1995-99).

Tom Crean's Career Record 31-28/3rd season
Marquette Marches To the Stripe
Marquette's 37 free throw opportunites yesterday vs. Loyola marked the most attempts from the charity stripe in a season opener by MU since 1995 when the Golden Eagles registered 39 opportunites against UW-Milwaukee. During Crean's tenure as head coach, Marquette has a 7-2 won-lost slate when shooting 30 or more free throws (1-0 in '99-00, 5-2 in 2000-01 and 1-0 in '01-02).
Rebound Notes
While Loyola finished with a 38-35 edge in rebounds yesterday against Marquette, Crean-coached MU squads have outboarded 35 of 59 opponents and show a 27-8 record in those games. Since Tom Crean has been Marquette's head coach, the Golden Eagles have outrebounded 16 opponents by 10 or more caroms and show a 14-2 record in those contests.
Chicago State Head Coach Bo Ellis
Bo Ellis (Marquette, '77) begins his fourth year as head coach of Chicago State and brings a school and career record of 18-64 into the contest. Ellis is no stranger to Marquette fans, having earned All-America status as a player while at Marquette and during a 10-year stint as an assistant coach with the MU basketball program. He is just one of five players at Marquette to have his jersey retired (#31) and he still holds down the No. 1 spot on the school's all-time field goal list. On Nov. 1, it was announced that Ellis had been selected as one of six NCAA Silver Anniversary Award winners. The award is presented annually to six former student-athletes who have made signicant professional and civic contributions since they completed intercollegiate competition 25 years ago.
Did You Know
That Cordell Henry is just seven steals shy of cracking the school's top 10 in that category ... Henry has 101 career thefts and holding down the No. 10 position is Roney Eford (1993-96) with 106 ... Entering Sunday's contest, Henry has nine career games of 20 or more points ... That the win over Loyola on Saturday was MU's 10th season-opening triumph in the last 11 seasons ... That two players playing in their first Marquette regular-season games accounted for five steals against Loyola (Dwyane Wade, 3 & Travis Diener, 2).

Nnamaka Travels With Swedish National Team
Senior forward Oluoma Nnamaka played for the Swedish National Team this past summer at the World University Games in Beijing, China. The 6-foot-7 Nnamaka helped his squad to a seventh-place finish by averaging 10.6 points and 5.0 rebounds over seven games. In Sweden's final game of the Games, Nnamaka totaled 18 points in a 95-74 win over Brazil.
More Tidbits To Ponder
Marquette's 80 points in the win over Loyola marked the highest scoring season opener by a Marquette squad since 1996 when MU topped UW-Milwaukee by an 82-55 margin ... It also represented the third highest point total by a Crean-coached MU team ... Marquette scored 82 points in games vs. Tulane and DePaul last year ... Cordell Henry's four three pointers boosted his career total to 95.
