ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Maybe the Wolverines were just too relaxed playing at home for the first time this season.
No. 16 Michigan, after shooting a fifth-best in team history 62% from the field at Syracuse on Sunday, managed just 44.1% in its 65-49 victory over Marquette on Thursday.
But the Golden Eagles' own lackluster shooting gave Michigan (4-1) a 25-24 halftime lead. The Wolverines needed only shoot a little better in the second half - 48.4% versus Marquette's 31 - as they stretched their lead to 41-28 midway through the second.
"It would have been wonderful to shoot 62% again, but we were playing against a different type of defense," Michigan coach Sue Guevara said.
While the Orangewomen unleashed a zone defense, the Golden Eagles (2-3) came hard at the Wolverines with a man-to-man variety. It kept the Wolverines at bay for at least half the game, but some quick adjustments at halftime let the olverines go on a run to start the second half.
Michigan used its size to lob the ball in low to the basket, and Marquette coach Terri Mitchell said her team was unable to be as aggressive.
"They came out (after halftime) fired up, and they took it to us and we never recovered," she said. "So hats off to Sue - she's a great coach - and to Michigan."
Raina Goodlow scored 15 points to lead the Wolverines, while Stephanie Gandy added 12. Forward Rachel Klug topped Marquette's scorers with 14 points.
Goodlow, a senior forward, was the only Michigan player to score near double-figures on Marquette's first-half defense, registering eight points before checking out with a couple minutes left in the half. This was despite playing "a little stiff after getting hurt in practice," Guevara said.
Marquette returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 2 in the Women's Basketball Showcase in Grand Rapids, Mich. The Golden Eagles take on Michigan State at 1 p.m. (EST) followed by Michigan vs. Notre Dame at 3 p.m. (EST).
