CHICAGO - A solid defense combined with a timely goal scoring helped Marquette defeat DePaul, 2-0, on November 3 at Wish Field on the DePaul campus. With the win, Marquette finishes the regular season at 14-4 and ends 8-2 in Conference USA play. DePaul finishes the season at 6-12-1 and 0-9-1 in conference play.
Marquette scored a quick goal and took the lead in the match's seventh minute. Senior forward Jill Vendetti (Franklin, Mass.) scored her fifth goal of the season on an unassisted play.
The Golden Eagles also scored quickly after the second half kickoff. Junior forward Ashley Spakowitz (Hartland, Wis.) scored her second goal of the season two minutes into the second half. She received assists from sophomore midfielder Kristen Jensen (Minooka, Minn.) and senior midfielder Jenny Strachota (Milwaukee, Wis.).
The Marquette defense held up its to keep its opponents from scoring for the 10th time this season. Marquette allowed DePaul just two first half shots. Marquette goal keepers Ashleigh Koenig (Naperville, Ill.) and Katie Bissen (Maple Grove, Minn.) did not have to make a save in the match.
With the win, Marquette earns the second seed in the upcoming Conference USA Tournament. The Golden Eagles host the tournament and will play their first round game on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at Valley Fields.
