CHICAGO - Junior forward Kate Gordon (Sioux City, Iowa) and junior defender Anne Dalecky (Wauwatosa, Wis.) were honored with two of the most prestigious women's soccer postseason awards, Conference USA announced. Gordon was named the league's Player-of-the-Year. Dalecky was named the conference's Co-Defensive Player-of-the-Year.
Gordon, fifth on Conference USA's career goals scored list (34), is the Conference USA Player of the Year. One of C-USA's most potent offensive players, Gordon is fourth in the league with eight goals and sixth with 47 shots this season. Her top performance of the season came last week against local rival Wis.-Milwaukee, as her two goals and one assist paced the Golden Eagles to a 3-0 win over the regionally-ranked Panthers. She is the second Marquette player to win C-USA's top individual soccer honor - MU's Kelly Roethe was the 1997 honoree.
Dalecky shares C-USA's Defensive Player of the Year award with Cincinnati goalkeeper Christy Hoffman. Dalecky anchors the league's second-best defense from her spot in the central defense. Under her guidance, Marquette has surrendered just 12 goals in 18 matches this fall. She has played in all 18 matches and started 17 of those contests. Dalecky is the Golden Eagles' first recipient of this award since Rhegan Hyppio in 1998. Hoffman currently leads the nation with a 0.34 GAA and has posted a league record 11.5 shutouts this season.
Rounding out the major awards, Cincinnati coach Meridy Glenn earned Coach-of-the-Year honors as the Bearcats went undefeated in Conference USA play. Saint Louis midfielder Jamie Perry was named the C-USA Freshman-of-the-Year.
Gordon, Hoffman and Dalecky are joined on the First Team All-Conference USA by forwards Amanda Duffy (East Carolina) and Ann Thomas (Cincinnati), midfielders Jenny Kehl (Saint Louis), Kristen Jensen (Marquette), Denise Peters (UAB) and Tasha Wagner (Cincinnati) and defenders Mikel Casey (Charlotte) and Heather Herweh (Cincinnati).
This is the second year in a row that Gordon, a second team All-American in 2000, has been selected First-Team All-Conference. Jensen (Shorewood, Ill.) was also a first-team selection a year ago as well as a member of the All-Freshman team. Dalecky earned her first All-Conference award with this selection.
One Marquette player was named second team all-conference. Sophomore midfielder Anne Ioder (Hartland, Wis.) was named to the all-freshman team a year ago in addition to her second-team selection this year.
Three Golden Eagles were named third team All-Conference. Senior forward Jill Vendetti (Franklin, Mass.) earned a spot after posting five goals, with three game winners, in the regular season. Sophomore Lindsay Smale (Cedarburg, Wis.) earned her second postseason honor after being named to the All-Freshman team last year. Junior defender Diana Detrie (Green Bay, Wis.) also earned a spot on the third team, with this being her first postseason award.
Marquette goes for its third straight Conference USA Tournament title beginning Wednesday, Nov. 7. The Golden Eagles battle Houston at 7:30 p.m. at Valley Fields. The C-USA Tournament begins on Nov. 7 at noon with quarterfinal action and continues through Saturday, Nov. 10 with the championship match at 2 p.m.
