Notre Dame Defeats Marquette, 60-33 Golden Eagles shoot 19 percent in loss
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Notre Dame put the clamps on Marquette's offense, allowing the Golden Eagles (5-6) just 10 field goals in a 60-33 decision. The defending national champions hit a solid 43.9 percent as Notre Dame (5-4) recovered from a week-and-a-half layoff will little effects of the down time.
The Fighting Irish were led by jacquline Batteast who had 11 points and 12 rebounds. Amanda Barksdale had 10 for Notre Dame. Only one MU player - sophomore guard Kelly Schwerman (Waukesha, Wis.) scored more than one field goal as she led the team with eight points.
Head coach Terri Mitchell was confident that her team would respond the next time out in proper fashion.
"It's one loss," she said. "It's a hard loss to take, but you bounce back and get ready for the next game."
Notre Dame was able to take advantage of 13 Marquette turnovers, blocked six shots and fired a hot 53.6 percent from the field to take a 37-13 halftime advantage. the Irish defense stifled MU in the early going, holding the Golden Eagles to just four free throws in the game's first 12 minutes. Marquette only hit three field goals in the first half, shooting 13.6 percent.
"It was contagious. When one person started missing, another would start missing, then another," Mitchell said. "We got tighter. When we went back into the locker room hitting 18 percent, it became a mental thing."
Barskdale was a force in the middle, with eight points in the first half. Schwerman was Marquette's lone offensive threat with six points at the break.
The Golden Eagles return to action against St. Mary's (Calif.) at 2 p.m. on Dec. 30 at the U.S. Cellular Arena.
