Marquette tries to continue its winning ways in December as it plays host to Dayton in the middle game of a five-game homestand.
The 17th-ranked Golden Eagles (7-0) jumped six places in the AP poll on the strength of winning their in-house tournament last weekend, scoring victories over Texas Southern and Sam Houston State. Following this game, Marquette will play Fordham on Saturday and is idle until a home date with Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Dec. 19.
Marquette captured its Coca-Cola Classic with a 77-58 victory over Sam Houston State on Saturday. Dwyane Wade scored 17 points and senior guard Cordell Henry added 16 for the Golden Eagles, who overcame a sluggish first half and were outrebounded 31-30.
"We have so many weapons, we're more than one-dimensional," said Henry, the tournament MVP. "You can't focus on one person. They (points) come from everywhere."
Marquette, which is enjoying its highest ranking since being 15th in February 1993, continues to be strong from the perimeter - shooting 40.9 percent on 3-pointers.
Dayton (3-2) has been as bad on the road as it has been good at home. The Flyers have recorded three lopsided victories at home but have lost at Villanova and Cincinnati by a combined 22 points.
Dayton is trying to sustain the momentum of an 85-41 rout of Morehead State on Saturday. Ramond Marshall scored 17 points and Sean Finn added a career-high 13 points while grabbing nine rebounds for the Flyers, who opened a 39-18 lead after 20 minutes.
The Flyers have been solid defending the 3-pointer, holding opponents under 29 percent for the season. Dayton held Morehead State, which had entered the game shooting 41.5 percent from beyond the arc, without a 3-pointer in 14 attempts.
The Flyers edged the Golden Eagles 61-60 last season as Yuanta Holland hit the game-winning basket with one second to play. Marquette, though, has won its last five games against Dayton at the Bradley Center and leads the all-time series 20-11.
