MILWAUKEE - Tulane shot 51.9 percent from the field and scored 34 points in the paint as the Green Wave (15-7, 8-2 C-USA) defeated Marquette. 78-66.
Four players scored in double figures for the Green Wave, led by 18 points from Janell Burse. Sarah Zawodny scored her sixth double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Every player on Marquette's scored at least two points.
"We knew they played a lot of players," said Tulane coach Lisa Stockton. "We weren't surprised. We just had to know who was on the court and make the adjustments as we needed to."
Marquette's leading scorer, Heidi Bowman, struggled connecting on just 2-of-11 shooting, but hit a pair of free throws down the stretch to give her 1,000 and 1,001 career points. She became the 16th MU player to do so, but her accomplishments were overshadowed by the loss.
"It doesn't mean a whole lot to me right now since we didn't win," Bowman said. "I'm sure it will someday."
The game was never really in much of a doubt. Tulane ran off to a quick 10-2 lead in the first four minutes of the game and led by as many as 12 in the final minute and a half of the first half.
"We definitely were not ready to play tonight," said Marquette coach Terri Mitchell. "They came in and scored easily inside. We had to do a better job of muscling up, and we gave up too many easy ones underneath."
Early in the first half, Marquette guard Rashida Gales got the Golden Eagles (9-11, 5-4 C-USA) as close as one point at 12-11 as she scored seven consecutive points.
"It starts with confidence," Gales said. "I am feeling more confident on the court and not forcing my shots and they started to fall."
However, Tulane forward Gwen Slaughter pulled off a similar feat scoring eight in a row on three-consecutive trips to give the Wave the 12 point lead.
Gales finished the night with nine points. For Tulane, Slaugher added 16 points, guard Sarah Goree scored 11 points and Teana McKiver scored 10 off the bench for the victors.
Marquette next plays on Sunday, Feb. 4 against Southern Miss. Start time is 2 p.m. at the U.S. Cellular Arena.
