Game Info
Hoping to pick up its fourth league road win, the Marquette basketball team plays at Louisville on Thursday (Feb. 8). Freedom Hall (18,865), the site of the 2001 C-USA Men's Tournament, will serve as the setting of the 46th meeting between Marquette and UL and tipoff is slated for 8:05 p.m. (CST). The game will be televised by ESPN with Bob Carpenter and Larry Conley handling the play-by-play and analysis, respectively. Following the Louisville outing, Marquette returns home to battle the Billikens of Saint Louis on Sunday (Feb. 11) starting at noon.
The Records
The Golden Eagles head into their game against Louisville with an overall record of 11-8 including a 6-2 C-USA mark, good for first place in the American Division. Marquette, has won three of its last four game and is coming off a hard-fought 71-65 win at Memphis last Friday (Feb. 2).
In that game, Marquette trailed by seven points, 24-17, with 3:33 left in the first half but rallied with a big 14-2 run over the remainder of the half to go into the locker room at halftime with a 31-26 advantage, just the the second time in the last 11 games that it led at intermission. Keying the spurt was junior guard Cordell Henry with six points while junior Oluoma Nnamaka chipped in four points.
In the second half, MU used a 10-2 sprint over a four-minute stretch to build an 11-point advantage (59-48) with 6:11 remaining. However, UM stormed back and eventually tied the game at 65-65 with just 1:20 left on the clock. Marquette then regrouped and made some crucial plays down the stretch to come away with the win. Over the final 1:20 the Golden Eagles converted all six of their free throw attempts while holding Memphis scoreless.
Leading Marquette in scoring was Henry was 21 points on six-of-11 shooting from the floor while draining all eight of his free throw opportunities. Senior Brian Wardle contributed 19 points and a team-best 10 rebounds, his first double-double of the campaign, while Nnamaka came through with 14 points and five caroms.
The Golden Eagles outrebounded the Tigers, who entered the game No. 1 in the league in rebound margin, by a 42-33 count.
Louisville hosts Marquette with an overall record of 8-14 including a 4-5 effort in C-USA outings. The Cardinals have dropped their last two games and are coming off a 72-51 loss at home to Saint Louis on Saturday.
Marquette-Louisville Matchup Features Top Scorers
Thursday's game at Louisville will see two of the league's premier scoring threats in action. UL's Marques Maybin holds down the No. 2 spot in scoring for overall games (19.2 ppg) and the No. 4 position in league games (19.1 ppg) while MU's Wardle is No. 4 in scoring (18.8 ppg) in overall contests and No. 2 in league affairs (20.9 ppg).
Marquette Head Coach Tom Crean
Tom Crean is in his second season as the head coach of the Golden Eagles' program. In his initial year, Crean (Central Michigan, `89) guided Marquette to an overall record of 15-14 that included a berth to the NIT, the school's 13th appearance in that tournament. In C-USA play, Crean led MU to an 8-8 record, good for fourth place in the American Division. In games played in Milwaukee, Crean stands 20-9 (19-7 at the Bradley Center, 1-2 at the Milwaukee Arena). He is 1-1 against Louisville.
Prior to being named the school's head coach on March 30, 1999, he served as an assistant for 10 seasons. His coaching resum? includes stops at Michigan State (1989-90), Western Kentucky (1990-94), Pittsburgh (1994-95) and most recently again at Michigan State (1995-99).

Marquette And The Boards
Marquette has outrebounded 11 opponents (10-1 in those contests) this season including six contests where it has finished with an advantage of 10 or more rebounds. The Golden Eagles have been outboarded in seven games this season (1-6). In MU's most recent game, it finished with a 42-33 bulge in the rebound department vs. Memphis, the team's high mark for boards in a league game this year. Louisville Head Coach Denny Crum
Denny Crum (UCLA, `58) is in his 30th year as head coach of Louisville and heads into Thursday's game with a school and career ledger of 671-290. He has guided the Cardinals to 20 or more win seasons on 21 occasions and captured national titles in 1980 and 1986. In addition, Crum has led UL to Final Fours on six occasions.
Golden Eagles Continue Fine Foul Shooting
Marquette continued its streak of fine foul shooting in the Memphis contest, knocking down 80 percent of its attempts (24-of-30). The Golden Eagles have connected on 70 percent or better of its foul shots in the last five games, tying the longest streak during Coach Crean's tenure, and have moved into the No. 3 position in the conference (.690). In league games, the Golden Eagles stand first in that category with a 73.0% effort. Over the last five games, the Golden Eagles have connected on 77.4 percent (110-of-142) from the line.
Marquette Faces Formidable Schedule in 2000-01
Marquette faces one of the most challenging schedules in the history of the program in 2000-01, playing a minimum of 12 opponents that participated in postseason play last year including two Final Four teams (Wisconsin and North Carolina). The Golden Eagles will play at least eight teams that recorded 20 or more wins during 1999-2000. Two MU opponents are in this week's USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Poll (#1 North Carolina and #18 Wisconsin) while two others received votes. Through Feb. 4, Marquette, ranked 54th in the RPI, has played or will play six teams that rank among the top 50 squads in the country according to the RPI, four of which are in the top 35.
Other Notes From the Memphis Game
The win over Memphis raised Marquette's league road record to 3-0, the first time a Golden Eagle has captured its first three road C-USA games ... The last time Marquette won three straight road C-USA games was in 1998 ... Marquette's 42 rebounds represented the most boards by the Golden Eagles in a C-USA game this season and raised the team's mark to 5-1 this when when finishing with 40 or more rebounds ... The Golden Eagles went 10-of-10 from the charity stripe over the last 2:32 of the Memphis contest ... Freshman Scott Merritt's eight points represented his best scoring effort of the C-USA campaign.
Wardle Figures in MU Career Categories
In addition to his career point production, Brian Wardle also figures among the Marquette top 10 career performers in a number of categories. Entering the Louisville game, he is No. 6 in career three-pointers (176), No. 7 in three-point attempts (477) and tied for No. 6. in free throw percentage (80.3%).
Marquette and the Foul Line
A goal of this year's MU team is to get to the foul line more and the Golden Eagles have accomplished that after 19 games, recording a total of 431 attempts from the charity stripe (22.6/per game) MU has attempted 23 or more from the foul line in 11 games including 39 vs. UMASS, the most attempts by a Crean-coached MU squad, and 36 vs. Centenary. During Crean's tenure, the Golden Eagles stand 23-9 in contests when finishing with 15 or more free throw attempts (10-7 this year). After 19 games last year, MU had attempted 333 free throws.
