Game Info
After dropping a close road decision to Houston on Wednesday, the Marquette basketball team closes out the regular season on Saturday (Mar. 3) when it plays at Charlotte. Halton Arena (9,105) on the Charlotte campus will serve as the site of the 17th meeting between the schools and tipoff is slated for 12:05 p.m. (CST). The game will be televised by ESPN Regional with Jim Brinson and Jeff Mullins handling the play-by-play and analysis, respectively.
Following the Charlotte encounter, Marquette will turn its attention to the C-USA Tournament in Louisville, Mar. 7-10.
The Records
The Golden Eagles head into their game against Charlotte with an overall record of 14-12 including a 9-6 C-USA mark, good for a second-place tie in the American Division with Charlotte. Marquette (4-3 in conference road games this year) is looking to regroup after dropping a 67-64 verdict at Houston on Wednesday. In that contest, the Golden Eagles fell behind by a 38-29 margin at halftime as the Cougars parlayed 10 MU turnovers into 17 points, negating a fine shooting half by Marquette (56.5%). During the second half, MU trailed by as much as 13 points (38-51) with 12:41 on the clock and still faced an uphill battle when the Cougars still led, 61-51 with 5:18 left. From there, MU mounted a steady comeback, using an 11-4 run to whittle the gap to three points (62-65) with 58 seconds left. A pair of charity tosses by Cordell Henry with 48 seconds left cut the gap to one point, 65-64. When UH sank one of two free throws with 26 seconds left, Marquette had a shot to tie the game, but a three-point attempt missed its mark. Henry finished the game with a team-high 22 points, hitting 10-of-17 from the floor, while doling out seven assists. Oluoma Nnamaka and Brian Wardle rounded out the double-figure point producers with 13 each. Marquette finished with a 51.0% percent mark from the floor, but the Cougars ended the game with a 35-28 edge on the glass.
Charlotte hosts Marquette with an overall ledger of 17-10, 9-6 in C-USA action. The 49ers have won five of their last six games and are coming off a 90-66 dismantling of DePaul on Wednesday. Charlotte is 9-2 in home games this year.
Blankson Battling on the Boards
Freshman Odartey Blankson's team-high six rebounds against Houston marked the third straight and fourth in the last five games where he had either led or shared for the team lead in rebounding. In the last three games, the 6-foot-7 Blankson is averaging 8.3 rebounds and is now tied with Oluoma Nnamaka for the team's lead in caroms with a 5.5 per-game effort.
Marquette Head Coach Tom Crean
Tom Crean is in his second season as the head coach of the Golden Eagles' program. In his initial year, Crean (Central Michigan, `89) guided Marquette to an overall record of 15-14 that included a berth to the NIT, the school's 13th appearance in that tournament. In C-USA play, Crean led MU to an 8-8 record, good for fourth place in the American Division. In games played in Milwaukee, Crean stands 22-10 (21-8 at the Bradley Center, 1-2 at the Milwaukee Arena). He is 1-2 against Charlotte. Prior to being named the school's head coach on March 30, 1999, he served as an assistant for 10 seasons. His coaching resum? includes stops at Michigan State (1989-90), Western Kentucky (1990-94), Pittsburgh (1994-95) and most recently again at Michigan State (1995-99).

Marquette And The Boards

In 12 seasons of head coaching, which includes a nine-year stint at Pfeiffer, Lutz has a career slate of 238-128.

After enjoying a 10-game streak where it shot 70 percent or better from the foul line, Marquette has slipped in the last two games, converting on 64.4% (38-of-59). Despite the last two games, MU still paces C-USA in free throw percentage with a mark of 70.9%. In league outings, MU ranks No. 1 with a 74.8% standard. Over the last 12 games, the Golden Eagles have connected on 74.0 percent (237-of-320) from the line.
Marquette Faces Formidable Schedule in 2000-01
Marquette faces one of the most challenging schedules in the history of the program in 2000-01, playing a minimum of 12 opponents that participated in postseason play last year including two Final Four teams (Wisconsin and North Carolina). The Golden Eagles will play at least eight teams that recorded 20 or more wins during 1999-2000. Two MU opponents are in this week's USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Poll (#4 North Carolina and #24 Wisconsin) while two others received votes. Through Mar. 1, Marquette, ranked 88th in the RPI, has played four teams that rank among the top 50 squads in the country according to the RPI, all of which are in the top 35.

The 66-64 score marked the fourth straight game between Marquette and Houston that had been decided by four or fewer points ...
