Marquette begins a busy week in preparation for next week's Conference USA Championships. The Golden Eagles begin the first of two events this week on Monday, April 16 at the Billiken Invitational as the Golden Eagles look to defend their title.
TOURNAMENT FORMAT AND FIELD
Two 18-hole rounds will complete the 2001 Billiken Intercollegiate. One round will be held on Monday, April 16, with play beginning at 7:30 a.m. Another 18-hole round will take place on Tuesday, April 17. Tee times are also set for 7:30 a.m. This is Marquette's first 36-hole event of the season.
Competing in this year's 16-team Billiken Invitational are: Cincinnati, Creighton, DePaul, Eastern Illinois, Evansville, John A. Logan, Lindenwood, Missouri Baptist, Saint Louis, Southeast Missouri State, UMKC, Murray State, Western Illinois, Western Kentucky and Wis.-Green Bay. Teams will field five golfers with the four best scores of each round going toward the team score.
GATEWAY NATIONAL GOLF LINKS
Gateway National Golf Links in Madison, Ill., will once again serve as the home course for the Billiken Invitational.
The course is 18-holes and is played to a par 71 at a distance of 7,092. Last year, the course played to a length of 6,684 yards while still being a par 71.
LAST TIME AT THE BILLIKEN INTERCOLLEGIATE
Marquette earned its only team victory of the season at the 2000 Billiken Invitational. The Golden Eagles shot 29-over par, but their 597 two-round score was two shots better than that of Southeast Missouri State. Marquette's first round 286 gave them a comfortable 10 shot lead heading to the tourney's final round.
While Marquette won the team event, two Southeast Missouri State golfers tied with Marquette's Mark Wentz for first in the individual portion of the event. Bryan Johnson and David Fulton of SEMO joined Wentz with scores of 147 to best the field.
Edvins Erkmanis and Tim Jacobs also finished in the top 10, tying for fifth with a 150. Marc Fisher rounded out the field in 26th place at 155. Last Time Out
The Golden Eagles took part in the Pirate Spring Intercollegiate Tournament and finished a respectable fourth in the 22-team field. Marquette, however, did have a stronghold on second place after the first two rounds. Marquette's 881 was 11 strokes behind that of tournament champion Campbell. MU finished seven shots behind second-place Elon and was two off third-place East Carolina.
Individually, MU had two golfers in the top 10. Matt Hilton became the first MU golfer this season to equal par. His three-round total of 216 placed him seventh. Freshman Ryan Weber, second after the first two rounds, finished ninth at 218.
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
Matt Hilton led the Golden Eagles in scoring for the second time this season at the Pirate Spring Intercollegiate. His score of par was the first of par or better since Brad White's two-under at the Legends of Indiana on Oct. 16-17.
Freshman Ryan Weber is seemingly the most consistent of the MU golfers, at least recently. He has had one of Marquette's top two scores in both events he has played this spring.
