Marquette Golf Team Stands Sixth At Billiken Invitational

Milwaukee -- The Marquette University golf team stands sixth out of 16 teams after the first day of the Billiken Invitational with a team score of 306. Missouri Baptist holds down first place with a mark of 299 while Evansville and Eastern Illinois are second at 301. Rounding out the top five are Murray State (303) and Wisconsin-Green Bay (305). The 36-hole event is being played at the Gateway National Golf Course in Madison, Ill.
Senior Mark Wentz (DeForest, Wis.) was the top Marquette performer on Monday, firing a two-over par 73 on the 6,567-yard course that played longer due to the blustery and cold conditions. Wentz's score was good for a sixth-place tie with Eric Steinback of Evansville and Mike Birkenfeld of Evansville. Michael Calef of Murray State and Neil Lykins of Cincinnati stand tied for first after the first round with an even-par 71.
Other Marquette competitors included senior Edvins Erkmanis (Franklin) who is tied for 21st place with a score of 76. Freshman Ryan Weber (Vancouver, B.C.) overcame a slow start and ended up shooting a 78, placing him in a tie for 36th position. Sophomore Matt Hilton (Muskego, Wis.) concluded his round with a 79, tying him for 43rd place.
