Milwaukee -- The Marquette University golf team stands in 12th place out of 19 teams after the first round of the FirstEnergy Collegiate held at the Windmill Lakes Golf Club in Ravenna, Ohio. Marquette recorded an 18-hole team score of 304, just six strokes behind sixth-place Iowa. The opening day of action was scheduled to be 36 holes, but the second round was called due to casual water on the course. The tournament will now be two rounds with the final 18 starting Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m.
Senior Mark Wentz (DeForest, Wis.) led the Marquette contingent by shooting a three-over par 73 (35--38), good for an 11th-place tie out of 100 competitors. Leading the tourney after the first round was Jon Mills of host Kent State who shot a two-under par 68 making him the only contestant in the field to break par.
Freshman Ryan Weber (Vancouver, B.C.) turned in a solid round and finished with a four-over par 74 (36-38), placing him in a tie for 22nd place. Senior Edvin Erkmanis (Franklin, Wis.) concluded his first day of action with a 78 (37-41), tying him for 57th position, while sophomore Matt Hilton (Muskego, Wis.) and senior Brad White (Lake Geneva, Wis.) registered marks of 79 and 81, respectively.
