Marquette Drops Semifinal Match To UAB

Marquette's hopes for a Conference USA Championship ended Saturday for the women's team as the Golden Eagles dropped a 4-2 match to UAB.

No. 1 seed UAB needed almost four hours to complete the victory over the No. 4 seed Marquette as three matches saw three sets.

Marquette grabbed the doubles point by winning the No. 1 and No. 2 matches, 8-6 and 8-1. The No. 2 team of Anna Pavlovic and Eva Trujillo-Hererra won their second consecutive match of the tournament. The No. 1 team of Genevieve Charron and Laura Garcia secured the doubles point for the Golden Eagles.

UAB rebounded from the doubles defeat by winning four of the five completed singles matches, including a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 decision by UAB's No. 1 player, Mirela Vladuescu, who is ranked 22nd in the nation. She defeated Garcia, who is ranked 71st in the nation. Garcia came back in the second set, but later dropped the third.

Veronica Briseno-Garcia scored the only singles victory for the Golden Eagles in a straight set match, despite needing a tie-breaker in the first set.

The Golden Eagles will now move to the third place match tomorrow at 9 a.m.
