NAVARRE, Fla. - The Marquette men's golf team sits in eighth place following the first day of the Conference USA Men's Golf Championship. The Golden Eagles shot a 306. Houston, last year's champion, leads the event at 290.
The Cougars proved the model of consistency in the first round. Three Houston golfers - Brad McIntosh, Andy Sanders and Simon Robinson -- sit in ninth place at even par (72). South Florida, in a tie for sixth place, holds two of the top three individual spots. Tele Wightman leads the tournament at four-under 68. Brett Hitchock is at two-under 70. Sandwiched between Wightman and Hitchock is Chris Campbell of Louisville at three-under.
Marquette's best finisher was sophomore Matt Hilton. After a rough front nine, Hilton recovered to a two-over, 74. He stands in 16th place.
Brad White is one stroke of Hilton's team leading pace. His 75 has him in a tie for 23rd place.
At 76, senior team leader Mark Wentz sits in 26th place. Senior Edvins Erkmanis shot an 81 in the first 18 holes and is in 49th place. The score that Marquette did not use in its first round came from freshman Ryan Weber, who shot an 85, good for 58th place.
The second of three rounds takes place on Tuesday, April 24, at 8 a.m. EDT.
