Two weeks removed from playing a course along the beautiful shores of Hawai'i, Marquette men's golf goes to the opposite extreme of the country to play in the Pirate Spring Intercollegiate in Greenville, S.C. The Golden Eagles will be one of 24 teams vying for the title.
Tournament Format and Field
A two-round first day and a final round on Saturday are what golfers from 24 teams will face at the Pirate Intercollegiate. Joining Marquette at the tournament are: Appalachian State, Bethune-Cookman, Campbell, Columbia, Concord, DePaul, East Carolina, Elon, Florida A&M, Gardner-Webb, George Mason, George Washington, High Point, Lenoir-Rhyne, Liberty, Rutgers, South Carolina State, St. John's, Tennessee State, The Citadel, Pennsylvania, Western Carolina and Winthrop. Teams will field five golfers with the four best scores of each round going toward the team score.
Bradford Creek Golf Course
Just seven minutes from the East Carolina campus, the Bradford Creek Golf Course will serve as the home for the Pirate Spring Intercollegiate. The course is lengthy at 7,151 yards and plays to a par 72. Long and accurate are keys to managing this course. The greens are of a bent grass variety and the fairways and rough consist of a hybrid 419 Bermuda grass.
Last Time at the Pirate Spring Intercollegiate
Marquette did not take part in the 2000 Pirate Spring Intercollegiate, held a week earlier last year.
Charleston Southern won the team honors of the 18-squad field posting a six-under 858. However, the course played to 6,836 yards last year as opposed to this year with an extra 315 feet (nearly an extra par three hole). Two teams finished on the happy side of par as East Carolina finished one stroke off the pace at five under.
David Ryles of Charleston Southern and Scott Polen of James Madison tied for medalist honors last year. Each shot a five-under, 211. Polen shot a final-round 70 to claim a share of the win, with 13 golfers finishing even par or better.
Last Time Out
The Golden Eagles competed in the Kauai Collegiate Cup in Princeville, Hawaii, finishing fourth of eight teams. Marquette shot a three-round 885. San Diego won the tournament title with a score of 869.
Individually, no Marquette golfer cracked the top 10, but the team showed consistency having all of its golfers finish within two strokes of each other. Mark Wentz and Ryan Weber shot a 222. Edvins Erkmanis, Brad White and Matt Hilton each shot a 224.
Wentz and Weber finished 15 strokes behind tournament winner Eric Mason of Western Kentucky who shot a 207. Both, however, were just one shot out of a tie for 10th place
Statistically Speaking
Ryan Weber became the fourth different golfer to lead MU in scoring in its six events, showing the balance of the team. Mark Wentz has led the team three times, including the Kauai Cup. Matt Hilton has paced MU once and Brad White has led the way twice.
Marquette recorded its second best aggregate score of the season with its 885 in Hawaii. The score was also its second best of the season in relation to par.
