Milwaukee -- Marquette's Brian Wardle turned in a solid performance at the Portsmouth Invitational last weekend as he helped his team to a 2-1 record over two days. Wardle was one of 64 college seniors who attended the NBA pre-draft camp.
Wardle averaged 16.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game over the three games and scored in double figures in all three outings including a 20-point performance in game 2. He connected on 46.1 percent from the floor (18-of-39) including a keen 56.2 percent (9-of-16) from three-point range.
"I thought that I played okay," said Wardle when asked to analyze his play. "I tried to do the little things -- diving after loose balls, taking charges and talking on defense. Overall, I believe that I helped myself."
Wardle, the lone C-USA senior to attend the Portsmouth Invitational, closed out his Marquette career as the school's No. and the league's No. 2 all-time leading scorer with 1,690 points. Wardle earned Conference USA First-Team honors in 2000-01 and finished second among the league's point producers with an average of 18.8 points per game.
"I thought that Brian competed very hard and tried to do all the little things like getting loose balls, rebounding and hitting the open man," said Marquette Head Coach Tom Crean who was in attendance. "He also shot the ball well and was in very good shape. The key for him now is to finish strong in school while getting better in his workouts."
Wardle hopes to earn an invite to upcoming pre-draft camps in Phoenix and Chicago.
