Milwaukee -- Matches against eight teams that advanced to last year's NCAA Tournament highlight the 2001 Marquette volleyball schedule. The 31-match regular-season docket of games was announced by head coach Laura Farina.
Of the eight matches against 2000 NCAA teams, four are against Conference USA opponents while four are on the non-conference portion of the schedule.
The Golden Eagles open the campaign the weekend of Aug. 31-Sept. 1 with an appearance at the Idaho State Invitational. Marquette's opening contest of the tourney will be against Cal State Northridge of the Big Sky Conference, the owners of a 16-10 overall record from last season. Following the match against the Matadors, MU will close out the Invitational with matches the following day against Portland and host Idaho State.
Perhaps the most challenging non-conference test awaiting Marquette will come on Sept. 5 when the Golden Eagles play at the University of Minnesota. The Golden Gophers, who advanced to the third round of the NCAA's last season, finished 2000 with an overall record of 30-4 along with a No. 9 national ranking at the end of the regular season. The match against Minnesota takes on an added twist as Farina will be matched-up against her collegiate coach, Mike Hebert. As a player at Illinois (1988-92), Farina earned All-America honors under his tutelage.
The Golden Eagles open their 13-match home schedule, Sept. 7-8, when it hosts the Marquette Challenge. This year's Challenge will be played at the Helfaer Rec Center on the school's campus. MU's first opponent will be Eastern Kentucky (Sept. 7, 7:00 p.m.) before playing Chicago State and Central Michigan the following day.
Another key non-conference date early in the year is Sept. 11 when MU plays at cross town rival UW-Milwaukee (7:00 p.m.). The Panthers have made three straight NCAA appearances and are coming off a 23-5 campaign.
Marquette will play 16 C-USA matches this year including a battle at home against East Carolina (Oct. 5) and road match at TCU (Nov. 9). ECU and TCU will be in their initial seasons as C-USA volleyball-member schools. The Golden Eagles will play their first three league matches at the MU Gymnasium, DePaul (Sept. 22), South Florida (Sept. 28), and UAB (Sept. 29). The Golden Eagles will play three teams on two occasions (DePaul, Charlotte and Cincinnati) while playing other C-USA squads once. C-USA teams that advanced to last year's national tournament included South Florida, Louisville, Cincinnati and Houston. This season's C-USA Tournament will be played, Nov. 15-18, in Houston.
Marquette will break from conference action and play four more non-conference foes including two that played in the 2000 NCAA Tournament -- at home against Loyola-Chicago (Oct. 23) and at Tennessee (Nov. 23).
"The 2001 schedule allows us to play against quality opponents throughout the season," said Farina, who will be in her third year as the coach of the Golden Eagles. "The non-conference portion has a good mix of teams from various conferences across the country. In addition, after sending four teams to the NCAA Tournament last year, C-USA schedule promises to be tough and demanding. "
