MILWAUKEE - If the slate for the 2000-2001 Marquette women's basketball season seemed impressive, just look at the 2001-2002 schedule. Of its 27 scheduled games, 17 are with teams that played in the post season last year, with 11 games against NCAA Tournament teams.
The schedule starts out with four of Marquette's first five games against NCAA Tournament teams. The Golden Eagles open the season against Iowa State at the U.S. Cellular Arena on Nov. 17 after two exhibition games at the Arena. A 25-5 team last year, Iowa State earned a no. 2 seed in the Midwest by winning the Big 12 Tournament.
Marquette then hits the road for the next five contests. MU takes part in the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout on Nov. 20-21. Formerly known as the Northern Lights Invitational, the Marquette women will join Iowa and Gonzaga in Anchorage for the four team tournament. MU will play Iowa, the Big Ten Tournament champion a year ago, in the first round on Nov. 20 and will play either Gonzaga or Alaska-Anchorage on Nov. 21.
Following its trip to Alaska, Marquette will face Midwestern Collegiate Conference Champion and NCAA participant Wis.-Milwaukee at the Klotsche Center on Nov. 27. MU hits the road against NCAA Tournament team Michigan on Nov. 29 and follows up with a Dec. 2 contest against Michigan State in Grand Rapids, Mich.
MU gets three in a row at home beginning on Dec. 5 against NCAA Tournament team Wisconsin on Dec. 5. LaSalle follows on Dec. 8 and Dayton finishes the home stand on Dec. 16 in the Bradley Center.
Marquette visits Arkansas State on Dec. 19 before it begins a difficult stretch.
Defending national champion Notre Dame is Marquette's opponent on Dec. 22. The Golden Eagles will be visiting the Irish. MU then returns home to take on West Coast Conference champion and NCAA Tournament team Saint Mary's (Calif.) on Dec. 30 at the U.S. Cellular Arena. The Golden Eagles take on Mountain West Conference tournament champion and NCAA participant Colorado State in Fort Collins on Jan. 2.
Marquette begins conference play on Jan. 6 at home against WNIT participant DePaul. After visits to South Florida and WNIT participant UAB on Jan 11 and 13. MU returns for a four-game home stand. WNIT team Memphis visits on Jan. 18, Saint Louis follows on Jan. 20, Southern Miss invades Milwaukee on Jan. 25 and Conference USA Tournament Champion and NCAA participant Tulane takes on Marquette at the Bradley Center on Jan. 27.
The Golden Eagles take on only one C-USA team twice next season. A Feb. 3 visit to DePaul will be MU's second contest with the Blue Demons. After that, Marquette travels to Charlotte on Feb. 8 and will visit East Carolina on Feb. 10 for its first conference game against the Pirates.
MU plays final two games at home on Feb. 15 and 17. WNIT participant Cincinnati first visits the U.S. Cellular Arena and defending C-USA regular season champion and NCAA team Louisville is the Golden Eagles' last home contest.
The year finishes on the road on Feb. 22 against WNIT team Houston. The season concludes on Feb. 24 with new Conference USA team TCU at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum in Fort Worth, Texas. The Horned Frogs won the Western Athletic Conference last year and made its first trip to the NCAA Tournament.
The Conference USA Tournament is scheduled for March 1-4 at the DePaul Athletic Center in Chicago.
Marquette also hosts the NCAA Mideast Regional on March 23 and 25 at the U.S. Cellular Arena.
