CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Marquette defeated Illinois, 3-1, in women's soccer on Monday, Sept. 17. The match was the first for both teams who had matches cancelled last weekend. Marquette improves to 4-1 with the win while Illinois dropped to 2-2.
"This was a great win by our team," head coach Markus Roeders said. "
Illinois is a great team that is going to do well. A win like this is big, especially considering it's on the road."
The Golden Eagles scored a quick second half goal to break a halftime 0-0 tie. Senior Jenny Strachota scored three minutes after the intermission for the 1-0 lead.
Marquette extended its lead to 2-0 beginning what was a late flurry of goals. Junior Kate Gordon (Sioux City, Iowa) found sophomore Laura Culhane (Brookfield, Wis.) at 84:09 to give MU a 2-1 lead.
Illinois cut the MU lead to 2-1 when Hollie Schurr scored a goal just 1:05 later. Marquette responded with a goal six seconds after the Illinois goal to take a 3-1 lead. Culhane and Gordon hooked up again, this time with Gordon scoring the goal, for the final tally.
Marquette returns to action on Friday, Sept. 21 against UAB at 7 p.m. at Valley Fields.
