Marquette Volleyball Squad Gears Up For DePaul

GAME INFO - The Marquette University volleyball team opens the Conference USA portion of its schedule this weekend when it plays host to DePaul on Saturday (Sept. 22) starting at 7:00 p.m. at the MU Gymnasium.
THE COACHES - Marquette is directed by third-year head coach Laura Farina (Illinois, '92) who owns a school and career record of 32-39.
DePaul is coached by Dawn Dockstader (Montana Tech '88) who is in her fifth year at the helm of the Blue Demons' program. Entering Saturday's action, Dockstader has a school and career mark of 68-69.
THE RECORDS -- Marquette meets DePaul with an overall record of 5-3. The Golden Eagles are looking to get back on the winning track following a four-game loss at Illinois State on Tuesday (Sept. 18). DePaul comes to town with a perfect 8-0 mark. The Blue Demons ran their win streak to eight on Tuesday when they topped UW-Green Bay in four games.
SERIES NOTES - DePaul leads in the all-time series by a 26-10 margin. The Blue Demons have won the last three and four of the last six matches between the two schools.
ON THE HORIZON -- Following Saturday's match, Marquette will battle crosstown rival UW-Milwaukee at the Klotsche Center on Tuesday (Sept. 25) starting at 7:00 p.m. The match is a makeup of the Sept. 11 contest that was postponed.
MARQUETTE ATTACKERS MORE EFFICIENT -- Marquette has finished four matches this year hitting 30 percent or better compared to none last season. Through Sept. 19, Marquette ranked fourth among C-USA teams in hitting efficiency (.252).
MORE TEAM STATS TO PONDER -- Through games played Sept. 19, the Golden Eagles hold down the No. 3 position among C-USA squads in assists with a 14.63 per-game average (DePaul is No. 2). MU's 16.0 attacks per game is third in the loop and the Golden Eagles' 2.48 service aces per game is good for the No. 2 slot.
MARQUETTE TRIO OFF TO FINE START -- Marquette seniors Mehgan Devine (Harris, Minn.) and Vesna Grbavac (Palatine, Ill.), along with freshman Shannon Devine (Harris, Minn.), rank among C-USA's top 10 performers in hitting efficiency. The eldest Devine stands No. 2 (.351) while her sister, Shannon, holds down the fourth spot (.329). Grbavac, who stands fifth in the conference in attacks per game (4.19 apg), is seventh in hitting efficiency with an effort of 30.6 percent.
NEWS AND NOTES -- Vesna Grbavac has 802 successful career attacks to her credit, good for the 10th spot on MU's all-time chart, and needs two to move into ninth place ... Marquette has recorded more digs than its foes in five matchesand stands 3-2 in those contests ... Freshman Jennifer Amobi (Silver Springs, Mary.) hit a season-high 35.7 percent (14-4--28) against Illinois State ... Sophomore Megan Markowski (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) has service aces in her last five matches and stands second in C-USA in aces per game (0.63 apg) ... Sophomore Gemma Greer (Winfield, Ill.) tops all players in C-USA in assists (through Sept. 19) with a per-game average of 13.61.
