FORT WORTH, Texas - Marquette relied on a tough defense and timely offense to hold off TCU, 2-0, in women's soccer on Sept. 28. With the victory over TCU (3-5, 1-2 C-USA), Marquette (7-1, 3-0 C-USA) extends its current winning streak to seven matches.
Marquette wasted no time establishing their dominant attack against the Frogs, taking five shots and three corner kicks in the first six minutes of play. On their fourth kick, sophomore midfielder Kristin Jensen (Shorewood, Ill.) lofted the ball from the corner and watched as senior midfielder Jenny Strachota (Milwaukee, Wis.) scored her fourth goal of the season on a diving header past TCU's senior goalkeeper Adrianne Labovitz.
With only 15 seconds remaining in the first half, the Golden Eagles struck again as senior forward Jill Vendetti (Franklin, Mass.) received a pass from junior forward Ashley Spakowitz (Hartland, Wis.), split two defenders and blasted a shot in the left corner of the goal from 12 yards out for her second goal on the year.
The Horned Frogs tried to play catch up but couldn't. Marquette played solid defense, as did TCU, throughout the contest, but it was Marquette who proved to be more aggressive. MU outshot TCU 22-7. Labovitz did her part to keep the Frogs in the contest, recording eight saves. Marquette goalkeeper Ashleigh Koenig (Naperville, Ill.) notched her fourth shutout of the season, saving four TCU scoring attempts.
Marquette rides its seven match win streak into a match at Houston on Sunday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. at Roberston Stadium.
