The Golden Eagles return to Valley Fields for two matches over the course of the week. Wis.-Green Bay travels from upstate to take on the Golden Eagles. That match is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Wednesday, Sept. 5. Central Michigan is Marquette's foe on Sunday, Sept. 9 at the Valley.
Marquette started out the season last week with tough 2-1 decisions to Oakland and Iowa. The Golden Eagles dropped their first match of the season by the aforementioned score to the Golden Grizzlies. Marquette rebounded with the one-goal triumph over the Hawkeyes in the finale of the Verizon Wireless Cup. Marquette finished second in the tournament with three players - Stephanie Welch, Erin Maysent and Laura Culhane - earning all tournament team honors.
Scouting Wis.-Green Bay
Wis.-Green Bay and Marquette have met every season that MU has had varsity women's soccer. The Golden Eagles have not lost to the Phoenix since MU's first year of soccer, dropping a 2-1 contest in 1993. Last season was the first time UWGB scored on Marquette since that 1993 match.
The Phoenix come into the contest at 0-1 after falling to Bowling Green, 2-0, in their season opener. The match with MU is UWGB's second of the year. Nora Kaitfors started in goal for UWGB and played the duration, saving two shots. The Phoenix's leading returning scorer from a year ago - Kristin Lau (eight goals, three assists) - was held to just two shots by Bowling Green.
Scouting Central Michigan
Central Michigan finished the first week of its season without a win, losing 2-1 to Pittsburgh and tying Duquense 1-1. Goalkeeper Elisabeth Quiney was tested all weekend as she faced 31 shots, stopping 15.
Leading the way for the Chippewas are Kjersten Kuhlman and Jennifer Williamson. Each scored goals in previous action for CMU. Williamson scored against Duquense and Kuhlman logged her mark against Pittsburgh.
In The Polls
Marquette fell out of the national rankings for the first time this season by virtue of its 1-1 week against Oakland and Iowa. The Golden Eagles had been ranked in nine consecutive NSCAA polls. The last time Marquette wasn't ranked was on Sept. 18, 2000. Marquette opponents for the 2001 season Brigham Young and Harvard also fell out of the poll, while Oakland moved into the also receiving votes category.
The regional rankings debuted with Marquette in the fifth spot. MU trails Notre Dame, Illinois, Kentucky and Oakland in the first installment of the Great Lakes region poll.
Detrie Makes The Most of Her Shot
Junior defender Diana Detrie (Green Bay, Wis.) had only taken three career shots and had not launched a scoring since her freshman season, but she made the most of her attempts in the match with Iowa.
Detrie took a pair of shots on Sept. 2 against Iowa and scored on one of them. Both of her efforts were right-footed blasts from well over 30 yards away. Both attempts were struck with good velocity and were accurate.
MU Finishes Second in Verizon Wireless Cup
By scoring more goals in the tournament, Marquette broke a tie with Iowa (each finished at 1-1) to place second at the Verizon Wireless Cup. Oakland won the tournament after beating Marquette and Wis.-Milwaukee.
The Marquette players were named to the all-tournament team. Stephanie Welch (Worthington, Ohio), Erin Maysent (Ames, Iowa) and Laura Culhane (Brookfield, Wis.) each were honored with their play against Oakland and Iowa. Culhane backed up her efforts with a goal against Iowa. Welch and Maysent were honored for all-around play.
Gordon Rising in MU Career Categories
Despite being held scoreless in the first two matches of the season, junior Kate Gordon (Sioux City, Iowa) needs one point to move into a tie for fourth place in Marquette's all-time leading scorers. Gordon, with 60 career points, trails Lanette Rossini and Katherine Ward, who have 61. Gordon should move into second by the end of the year. Jessica Peterson is in third with 65 points and Erin Morgan sits in second with 66 points. Kelly Roethe, the career leader, is at a distant 123 points.
Gordon is one goal out from second on the all time list. With a school record 17 goals last year, Gordon upped her career total to 26. Peterson scored 27 career goals. Roethe is the career leader at 49 goals.
Marquette Pair Named Preseason All-Conference
Receiving preseason accolades for Marquette are junior forward Kate Gordon (Sioux City, Iowa) and sophomore midfielder Kristen Jensen (Shorewood, Ill.). Both were named to the preseason All-Conference USA squad.
Gordon, a first team All-Conference and second team All-American in 2000, set a school record for points (40) and goals (17) a year ago as she earned several postseason honors. Jensen scored 12 points on three goals and six assists as she earned first team All-Conference honors in her first collegiate season.
Golden Eagles Tabbed as Preseason Favorites
Marquette has been chosen to repeat as the Conference USA regular season champion in a vote by the league's head coaches. Marquette is predicted to win its third straight C-USA crown.
Marquette ran through the C-USA schedule undefeated in 2000 going 10-0-1, finishing the year at 20-3-1. The Golden Eagles also won the C-USA Tournament for the second straight time to advance to the NCAAs.
Rounding out the top five are Saint Louis, Charlotte, Cincinnati and Houston. C-USA newcomers TCU and East Carolina are picked sixth and seventh respectively.
