Milwaukee -- The Marquette volleyball team dropped a three-game decision to the No. 14-ranked Golden Gophers of Minnesota on Wednesday evening at the Sports Pavilion on the UM campus. Minnesota raised its record to 3-1 after recording a 30-13, 30-21, 30-16 decision over the Golden Eagles who saw their record slip to 2-2.
Leading Marquette's effort was senior Mehgan Devine (Harris, Minn.) with seven kills while her younger sister, Shannon, totaled five kills. Senior Vesna Grbavac (Palatine, Ill.) and sophomore Megan Markowski (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) each totaled five digs.
Minnesota sophomore outside hitter Cassie Busse (Prior Lake, Minn.) registered 11 kills along with a 55.5 attack percentage (11-1--18). The Golden Gophers finished with a 47.7 attack percentage and finished with an edge in digs (36-25) and service aces (13-2).
"We were hampered throughout the match by hitting errors (23 for the match) and really couldn't generate any momentum," said MU Head Coach Laura Farina. After getting off to a bad start in game 1, we competed at a much higher level in the second game and led for a good part of that game. However, we couldn't maintain the level needed to be successful."
The Golden Eagles' next action will be this Friday and Saturday (Sept. 7-8) when it hosts the Maquette Challenge. MU will meet Eastern Kentucky at 7:00 p.m. on Friday (following the Central Michigan - Chicago State match) before tangling with Chicago State (Noon) and Central Michigan on Saturday (7:00 p.m.). All matches of the Marquette Challenge will be played at the Helfaer Rec Center.
