MILWAUKEE - Marquette held Wis.-Green Bay without a shot, while recording 40 of its own, and defeated the Phoenix, 2-0, in women's college soccer. Marquette improves to 2-1 with the win while UWGB remains winless at 0-2.
Marquette's best defense was its offense, which kept UWGB with out the ball for most of the contest. UWGB's total of zero shots marks the first time in school history that Marquette has held its opponents without a shot. While Marquette had 40 shots, 20 in each half, it found itself tied with UWGB at the end of the first period.
"Defensively, we were dominating," junior forward Kate Gordon said. "It was kind of frustrating to have all those opportunities early and not score a goal. We just kept at it and a couple went in."
Marquette got its first goal three minutes into the second half. Gordon (Sioux City, Iowa) scored her first of the season after receiving a long lead pass from sophomore midfielder Laura Culhane (Brookfield, Wis.). The goal moved Gordon into third place on Marquette's all time points list with 62. She moved into a tie for second in career goals with 27.
The Golden Eagles scored their final tally on a set piece. Sophomore Kristen Jensen (Shorewood, Ill.) struck a corner kick aimed at the head of senior midfielder Jenny Strachota (Milwaukee, Wis.). Strachota was unable to reach the ball, but junior midfielder Kristin Halley (Overland Park Kan.) made a diving header from six yards to put the ball in the net.
"We are pleased with the result," head coach Markus Roeders said. "We played the way we wanted to play. We dictated tempo. If you keep your opponent from having a shot on goal, you have done everything that you are supposed to do on that end. On offense, we did everything but score more goals."
The Golden Eagles return to action on Sunday, Sept. 9 with a 1 p.m. match against Central Michigan at Valley Fields.
