Marquette Volleyball Tops Eastern Kentucky

Milwaukee -- The Marquette volleyball team used a strong attack Friday evening to come away with a three-game win over Eastern Kentucky in the opening round of the Marquette Challenge held at Helfaer Rec Center. The Golden Eagles raised their record to 3-2 following a 31-18, 30-21, 30-19 decision over the Colonels (1-3).
Leading the way for the Golden Eagles were seniors Mehgan Devine (Harris, Minn.) and Vesna Grbavac (Palatine, Ill.) who finished the match with 14 and 12 kills, respectively. Devine hit a team-high 48.0 percent (14-2--25) while Grbavac also totaled a match-high 11 digs. Junior Danielle Hagen (Milwaukee) turned in a strong effort with nine kills, a 35.0 attack percentage and seven digs.
For the match, Marquette hit 29.6 percent (47-15--108) while EKU finished with an effort of 12.5 percent (30-18--96).
In the opening match of the Challenge, Central Michigan defeated Chicago State in four games, 30-21, 29-31, 34-32, 30-25.
Marquette returns to action tomorrow when it takes on Chicago State at 10:00 a.m., before closing out the weekend with a match against Central Michigan at 7:00 p.m.
