MILWAUKEE -- The Marquette women's basketball team extended their Conference USA winning streak to five games, beating the Southern Miss Golden Eagles 68-59 Friday night at the U.S. Cellular Arena.
Marquette was led in scoring by junior Rachel Klug who finished the game with 16 points and added a team high nine rebounds. Junior Rashida Gales added 12 points for Marquette.
Marquette was able to win despite the long distance shooting by Southern Miss. Junior La'Tasha Sumerall tied a school record with seven three-pointers and finished 28 points. Southern Miss finished the game with nine three pointers.
Marquette when on a 6-0 run late in the first half that allowed them to take a 31-28 lead with 3:20 left. Southern Miss answered back with Sumerall who connected on her sixth three pointer of the half to tie the game at 31 with 2:42 left in the half.
Marquette went on an 8-0 run early on in the second half to take a 49-48 lead with 12:06 in the second half. Southern Miss may have been on fire from beyond the arc, but Marquette was dominant in the paint, outscoring Southern Miss 34-18 in that area.
Southern Miss had a one-point lead with 7:23 left in the game when Marquette decided to take over. Marquette only allowed six points in the final 7:23 while scoring 14 of their own. Marquette connected on 10 of their final 12 free throws during that stretch.
"Our shooting wasn't there tonight, but if you attack and get to the free throw line, you can still score," said head coach Terri Mitchell.
With the win, Mitchell tied Tat Shiely as the all-time winningest coach in Marquette women's basketball history. Mitchell's record now stands at 111-55.
"I'm glad we can be a part of some history making for Terri," said Klug. "We hope we can get her many more wins."
Marquette's record is now 12-7 overall and 5-1 in the conference.
"We knew our non conference schedule would pay off," said Gales. "We just have to keep going out there and playing hard every night."
The Golden Eagles continue their home stand at Al McGuire Court at the Bradley Center on Sunday for a Conference match up against Tulane. The game will start at 3 p.m.
